Proximal-Medial-Distal?

Tuesday, January 28th, 2003

Hey Gang,
I have a question. I have 8 ft bypassed and 10 ft still online (a small
amount was removed when I had wls). Is this a proximal, medial, or
distal? I would like to know this—sort of confused since I don’t know
the cms etc.

Cindy’s Questions on “Failure”

Sunday, January 26th, 2003

Cindy-don’t see many responses to your discussion request about “the
surgery failing the person vs. the person failing [the?] surgery.” I
think it’s a very good discussion topic, especially, after
considering some of the recent posts. You know most of us have garages
or at least a closet with tools in them. So we should all be able to
relate to the tool analogy. We should first chose the proper tool for
the job at hand. If we don’t know what that tool is then we can
usually go to an expert to get some advice. In some cases there are
several tools that can be chosen. Each tool will do the job. One may
do the job more quickly than another, be easier to use, or be readily
available if not already in your garage or closet. You can then select
which tool is best for you. The best tool may not be available in your
area-so you may have to complete the job with the tool that is
available. If you decide to use a tool for other than its intended
purpose, you risk damaging the work or the tool or being frustrated. A

Sunday, January 26th, 2003

Hi Everyone,
Well went for my 3 month check up I have now lost 38.9
lb! To happy! I was expecting to get my frist filling today but the Doc says I
am doing so well it’s not needed. So I guess I’m doing everything right. Also I
did mention to him that my nails are very soft, breaking not growing since my
surgery, also that my toenails are a yellowish color. It is prob from lack of
protein. He also changed my vitiaims I am no longer going to take
Flintstones…lol. He put me on Centurm Silver. So thats about it untill next
time.
Good Luck To All On this Journey!

Can one get too much protein?

Sunday, January 26th, 2003

Hi all
Saw the nutritionist today and she told me that I am
getting too much protein. I didn’t think that was
possible? I get a little over 100g per day in a combo
of protein drinks and some food. I was ready to
increase that amount too as most people seem to say
that increasing water, protein and exercise helps
break a plateau.
So what do you all think? Can we get too much protein
and is 100g per day too much?
Just curious.

New to list and introduction

Sunday, January 26th, 2003

I am ten months post-op DS and what a time it has been. This time last
year I weighed 293 pounds, I lost 6 pounds before surgery, now I weigh
167 pounds. Weight loss surgery has given me back my life on my own
terms. I eat anything and everything and nothing seems to phase this
surgery, I am still losing weight no matter what I put into my mouth. I
eat a couple of donuts and several eggs for breakfast, I munch on
cookies or chips for a snack, lunch is chicken salad or cobb salad with
extra blue cheese dressing and a piece of chocolate torte, I eat beef
jerky in the afternoon for a snack, and dinner usually is a 8 oz steak,
a small baked potato with butter, sour cream and cheese sauce.
I have about 25 more to go to reach goal, and the weight loss has been
effortless, but to have one less thing to obsess about is eating and
dieting, after a lifetime of dieting, I am glad to get rid of the good
food/bad food focus.
Thanks for listening

“WATER”

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

Water, water everywhere but in me. I HATE WATER. Very strong
statement but I have never liked it, I’ve tried every brand available
and haven’t found one I really like. I’ve been getting in about 20
oz. a day and that’s an all day struggle. I do drink crystal lite
with no problems and of course, my protein shakes. Any suggestions?
I know how important water is.
Also, does anyone know if it is o.k. to chew your Calcium pills?
I split them to small pieces and put them in unsweetened applesauce
and have no problem chewing them.
Thank you for all your help.

Lis P. and calories

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

Lis
One cannot survive on 300 calories per day. It is not physically possible. I
have researched the issue, and the lowest BMR (basal metabolic rate)–that’s
calories you burn just existing– for people WITHOUT a metabolic disorder is
about 850 calories, so there is very little chance you could gain weight on 300
calories a day. Perhaps you want to check with your doctor and see if something
else is going on! Also, at 300 calories you are in starvation mode, your body
will desperately hold on to every bite of food you put in your mouth, so
“starving” will actually backfire when it comes to losing weight.
Just some food for thought

Those big calcium pills

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

Hi group
Please help me with the following:
I hate those big old calcium pills because they always get stuck in
my throat. (The bright side is that I had to increase my water intake
in order to wash those suckers down!) Can I instead take the contents
out of the pill and sprinkle it on something or mix it in something?
If yes, how does it taste?
Do I have to switch to liquid pain medicine now? Or can I still
absorb stuff like Tylenol pills?
What is the best chewable multi-vitamin readily available in
drugstores?
Thanks

Small children during surgery…

Saturday, January 25th, 2003

Hello to everyone!! Well, my surgery date is fast approaching. It appears
that with all of my ordeals involved with getting my surgery authorized by my
insurance, and with figuring out arrangements for my little girls care and
how to get the oldest one to school, etc…while Im away at the hospital and
out of commission, I have forgotten one VERY important thing…. Their
emotions and security!!!
~How do I reassure my worrisome 8 year old little girl that Mommy will not
die and that Im going to be okay and that I will return home……She will
see me again….I will not look different. All fears my daughter has
recently expressed.
~What do I tell my 3 year old that will explain where Im going and that I am
coming back……..and yet not burden her with information that she is just
not ready for???
It appears that Ive been so wrapped up in myself that although I thought I
was “taking care” of my girls…I really was not.
