Dawn’s Question

Friday, January 24th, 2003

Hi everybody,
I am also eight months post-op and I agree with Darla. It seems to
me that water is extremely important. Of course eating correctly and
exercising play a vital role. However, when I “up” my water from 64
oz to 80 or 100 oz, the weight loss increases. That should tell us
something shouldn’t it?
As an early pre-op, I had a “problem” with plain water and drank a
lot of Crystal Lite. But as the months progressed, plain-bottled
water has taken its place. I know it seems weird but 80-100 oz of
Crystal Lite did NOT make a difference in my weight loss. But, with
plain-bottled water, SIGNIFICANT weight loss has continued.
I eat 2 times a day and usually I don’t snack. I can eat any food
that I have tried. I know what dumping is - although I don’t TEST
that process too often. I choose not to eat sweets or fats too
often. I also choose not to eat bread, crackers, pasta, chips,

16 months post op

Friday, January 24th, 2003

Hi all!!
This is my first time posting but have been reading since before my surgery.
Just wanted to share the good news….as of today I have lost 203 pounds!!!
WOO HOO!
I’m going through a “phase” right now where food just doesn’t want to stay
down some days. I’m hoping it will pass. I went for an upper GI a month ago
and the Dr. said I had a filling defect……then had to have an endoscopy
about 2 weeks ago and that Dr. said everything is fine….so go figure.
Anyway, just to give you a little background about me……I started out at
410 pounds, went in for open RNY on August 7th 2000. Two weeks later I was
in and out of the hospital for a month with blood clots in my lungs. That
has been the only time that I doubted my decision about having this surgery
done. I was on Cumadin for 8 months and now on a baby aspirin a day for the
rest of my life. Until recently I’ve NEVER had any problems with any kind of
food. I’ve never deprived myself either…..around my time of the month it’s

It is so good to hear of your success!
I had my surgery on 10-31-00. I’m 5′-10″ and at surgery time I weighed 371#.
Today I’m weighing in at 245#’s more or less. I have hit a plateau but am happy
with the weightloss so far. My doctor wants me to get to about 170#’s and I am
sure I will get there.
Oh, how I long to hear those words - “I want you to gain some weight.”
Thanks for sharing your success.

It’s finally happened!

Whew! I had just about given up. I’d begun to think it would never happen,
but about 4pm I got the call. I am insurance company approved and I have a
date!!!!!! My pre-op appointment date is Jan 10 and Surgery is with Dr.
Callery on Jan 15th!!!!!! I have soooo many emotions going on. I am excited
and apprehensive on what my life will be like (I’ve NEVER been thin, not
even as a baby!), worried that I’m going to be too different and not even
like the “new me”. Hot, cold, up, down, you name it it’s all going on here
in this not-so-little body/brain! Thanks everyone for the support and
advice up to this point, I don’t think I’d have made it this far without all
the encouragement and advice. And I know I’ll still need you along the next
phase of my journey. Well, it’s off to bed, but I just had to share!
“Nobody opens one’s petals fearlessly like a flower, dancing in the wind,
and in the rain, and in the sun… so fragile but without any fear. We are
all living with closed petals, afraid that if we open up we will become
vulnerable.” - Osho.

Not good…

Dear Everyone:
Wow, what a week. Monday I had my B12 shot, which is supposed to give you
energy. Well, it has not kicked in yet. I have been vomiting everything for
over a week. It seems my stoma is closed, or strictured. So I went to see
my surgeon yesterday. I am doing well…otherwise. Its been 7 weeks. I
have lost 59 pounds. Unortunately they could not set up my dialation until
Dec. 14th!!!!!!! That means another week and a half without anything to eat.
I feel like Im going NUTS. This morning even WATER came back up. I am so
glad I have lost weight….but this vomiting is horrible. Im sorry for the
whining……I just needed to vent.
Love,

My date is approaching!!!!!

I did not realize I would be getting so nervous. I am scheduled to
have a Fobi Pouch/Gastric Bypass on December 18th, 2001. This will be
an open procedure for me as they have to reverse my acid reflux
surgery I had last year. However, as that day approaches, I look
forward to starting my new life. If anyone has any words of
encouragement of has any advice, please let me know. Thank you….Tina

Gastric Fistula

Thursday, January 23rd, 2003

Hello:
I need to comment on this discussion of gastric fistula and the impression that
it can’t happen with a transected stomach.
I’m a Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass post-op of over 2 1/2 years and have been
documented with a fistula via an EGD procedure (going down my throat and taking
a look), an upper GI and a CAT Scan.
All show a fistula between my TRANSECTED pouch and remaining stomach!
Truly one for the books. Mother Nature wants to put things together so She
built this little “tunnel” (connection) between my pouch and remaining stomach.
Sometimes food goes out my stoma normally and other times it overflows into my
old stomach.
I have not been able to continue to lose weight for about 12 months now… I’m
still 120 pounds down to the good, but am just writing to advise that strange
things DO happen! I still have a ways to go. If it happens it will, and if
not, so be it! I exercise at the gym a minimum of 5 days a week and have made

nutrients after RNY

Thursday, January 23rd, 2003

I previously posted a question about “loop” bypass and received many
helpful responses. Because of the responses I have cancelled
the “loop” surgery, thanks to your responses. Anyway, now I am back
to considering the Lap RNY but I have one concern. I want to know if
any of you that have had the RNY have suffered any nutrient-
deficiency problems, even with taking nutrition supplements? Such as
osteoporosis, arthritis, etc. What type of supplements do you take?
Liquid or pills? Are they prescribed so that the insurance picks up
part of the cost??? I would appreciate any and all input, from
recent post ops and further out post ops…
Thanks!
Pamela

Stats and answers

My stats and answers to Dawn’s question:

1. What do you typically eat in a day? Maybe give
foods and amounts. I in no way want to critic what
you eat. I am just interested in what your “eating
life” is like. I have also heard that sometimes
people are driven to eat sugary or crunchy (chips and
such) things when they have a mostly restrictive
procedure and wondered if you experienced this. I
have heard this is not necessarily a non compliance
thing, but a matter of body survival as that is what
works.
