Perfectly normal. I remember eating a banana thinking, "this will be my
last banana." And Little Debbies ... and candy bars ... and pasta ...
everything. I felt like I needed to say goodbye to all my foods before
surgery. But now almost 3 years later I find that although some foods make
me sick (milk, mayo, too much sugar), I can eat anything I want. Just in
much smaller quantities. So go ahead and enjoy. The weight you gain now
you'll lose in the first month. Just try not to gain more than 20 pounds.
There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
Congratulations on your surgery date and good luck!

I am scheduled for surgery January 14, 2002. Last night when I got
on the scale I realized I had gained 10 pounds since I was weighed by
my surgeon in November. It seems as tho I am eating everything I
ever liked. Is this normal. Any suggestions..
Thanks Audrey

Hi Audrey,
I can totally relate. I had to lose 15 pounds before
a surgery date would be schedule. I lost 18 and
haven't been on a scale since! I'm eating everything
in sight. I think it's a combination of the holidays
and stress about the surgery. Basically i don't have
an excuse, but I'm right there with you.
I keep trying to tell my self that if I can lose 15
pounds in the first month after surgery that I'll be
at X weight if i don't gain any more and only at Y
weight if I do. Hasn't been helping too much though
;)
Thanks!
Bonnie

Audrey,
For me it was normal. I kept thinking of everything I loved to eat that I
would NEVER be able to eat again and I would eat it. I ate like crazy for
about 2 months. I especially went crazy over desserts. Cheesecake was a big
one as was ice cream. My advice is to just let yourself go and enjoy. After
a while I got tired of all the eating and stopped on my own....prior to
surgery...lol. I never thought I would tire of eating. It was liberating to
me. Never before in my life had I eaten without guilt. It was wonderful and
it was worth the 16 pounds I gained. The funny thing is, since surgery I can
eat many of those things I thought I'd never eat again...... all but dairy
and desserts. But now, most of time, I don't even miss them. Food is not an
<!--more-->
issue for me the way it used to be. Today was the first time I can think of
that for a twinge of a second I wished I could have some fudge. A co-worker
brought some sweets in for a treat for everyone and she said, "I know you're
trying to lose weight, but would you like just one?" Like I said, for a
spilt second I wished I could, then I just smiled and said "I can't do sugar
at all, it makes me ill." It felt so liberating to just announce that and
walk away. She said, "Cool, I wish it were that easy for me." The truth of
the matter is that I don't even know if I still dump....I haven't tested that
since I accidently dumped on BBG sauce that was too sweet. Don't plan on
testing it either. That's something that I prefer not to discover...since
sweets are a real trigger for me. So back to your question. In my opinion
and in my experience it is normal to eat everythink in sight before surgery.
I wouldn't worry about it, but I also wouldn't lose sleep thinking that
you'll never be able to eat "that" again. Many of the things you will sooner
or later and hopefully you'll discover that it really doesn't matter anyway.
Best of luck to you on your journey!
Vicki
