Butt kicking needed/Tammie

Wednesday, February 26th, 2003

I have to disagree with Tammie’s post about having chocolate every day and
soda is ok. The whole point of this surgery is not to be perfect but to
regain health and in order to do that we must follow our doctors orders and
try and do our best to work the tool which means avoiding or limiting certain
foods. Chocolate is does not have any nutritional value and is loaded
w/calories and soda has carbonation which is not good for our tummy. Yes,
Sandra is doing great and def. should be commended for her excellent weight
loss, but if her old habits are coming back she needs to deal w/that now
becuz it’s very possible to gain the wieght back. I’ve been there so i know
how easy it is to go back to eating junk. The first few months referred to as
“honeymoon period” are so that we learn new habits that will enable us to
keep the wieght off later on. I’m 9 months out and can eat everything in much
larger amounts so if I slack off now i will never reach my goals. However, i
do believe in moderation becuz this is a lifestyle change not a diet.

Milestone to share

Tuesday, February 25th, 2003

Hi Gang,
I just came from parent’s night at my daughter’s gymnastics class. The
parents were to participate in the class with the girls (LOL). The entire
time I was thinking to myself, “I can’t believe I am here doing this and I
can’t wait to tell everyone on OSSG!” We played with a giant parachute and
ran all around. We did stretching exercises and jumped on the tumble track
(kind of like a trampoline, only longer and narrower, like a track!). I
climbed through a small tunnel on my belly and swung from a rope and jumped
into a pit of foam blocks. My daughter was so excited to have her mom there
and doing everything right along with her. We had a ball and I owe it all to
WLS.
Have a wonderful holiday season everyone!

Inspiration and thanks to Maryse

Tuesday, February 25th, 2003

I would like to thank Maryse for her inspirational post a few weeks
back. She posted her “Milestone” of sorts about how she is now
running - something she never thought she would be able to do. She
was up to 2 minutes, 12 times alternating with walking some (if I
recall correctly).
I am a 4 year post op. Lost 125 lbs and gained about 15 of it back.
I decided to follow in Maryse’s footsteps and try the walking/running
thing. Today I was able to make it 2 minutes straight twice! (I’ve
been doing 1 min walk/1 min run for 15 mins) but I gave it a shot
today at 2 minutes and did it! TWICE!! I was thrilled!! Like Maryse,
this was something I NEVER thought I would be able to do; nay, WANT
to do! but I really like it and the sense of accomplishment is so
worth it.
Anyway, I guess what I wanted to say is if you are particularly moved
into action by something someone writes here, let them know about it

Butt kicking needed

Monday, February 24th, 2003

Ok gang!
I think it is time to fess up. I need a major butt kicking. (I am smiling
when I say that, so don’t think I am depressed about this issue… just
determined to do what it takes) I am struggling with eating foods that are
primarily high in processed sugar. I do dump so when I eat sugar foods… I
only eat a tiny bit but tiny bits can add up. I have a piece of candy almost
everyday. Grantite…it is only a hersey kiss instead of the whole bag… but
I am giving in to my cravings and I don’t want to do that anymore. I also
find that I am giving in to sodas…..they are diet (mostly caffine free)
sodas…. but I am drinking them every few days now. I really want to make
life changing new habits and I see some of my old ways creeping back in and I
want to nip it in the bud.
That isn’t to say I don’t EVER want to allow myself some of these things in
moderation but I don’t want them taking control of my eating again. I do know
and I am very aware now that carbs and sugars and caffine make me crave more

DEALING WITH THE MENTAL ISSUES

Trina,
I have to say that those mental aspects were the toughest thing for me. It
wasn’t long lived….about the first 3-4 weeks after surgery but I went into
a depression. I had always used food as comfort, a reward, and celebration.
After surgery eating anything or drinking anything made me feel lousy. My
poor tummy was trying to heal and didn’t want anything in there. So mentally
I had to adjust from food bring joy, to food bringing pain. For me, that was
difficult. I had to learn to deal with issues in a healthy way rather than
eating them into oblivion…. The main thing is, keep it all in perspective
and remember that this too shall pass. I helped myself get over it by
planning all the things that I would soon be able to do. I have two horses

Any input on Dr Liu at UCLA?

Sunday, February 23rd, 2003

I am scheduled to meet with Dr. Liu in January and would like to know if
anyone has either met with him or had their surgery done by him. I am in the
process of comparing surgeries and surgeons at the moment and it is an
overwhelming process….so any input would be welcome.
Thank you.

Saturday, February 22nd, 2003

I am scheduled for surgery January 14, 2002. Last night when I got
on the scale I realized I had gained 10 pounds since I was weighed by
my surgeon in November. It seems as tho I am eating everything I
ever liked. Is this normal. Any suggestions..

Carbs vs. No Carbs

Saturday, February 22nd, 2003

Hello all,
I wanted to thank everyone for responding to my question carbs vs. no carbs
and fast or slow weight loss. Someone asked me to share what I’d discovered
so here goes:
What I found out is we’re all different and what works for one may not work
for another. Nothing profound…nothing new. Some responded that they
didn’t have carbs for at least 8 months out and their weight loss had been
great. Other’s said they eat carbs but try to eat protein first. Some even
still partake in McDonald’s chicken nuggets and fries. And everyone’s losing.
I was complaining that I was losing slowly and maybe it’s because I eat too
many carbs. But a few of you pointed out that I’ve already lost 60% of my
excess weight in 5 months. And that’s where we should be measuring
ourselves. Not actual weight lost but percentage of excess weight lost.
Someone who doesn’t have as much to lose seems like their losing more slowly
but the fact is, percentage wise, they’re probably losing about the same.

Exercise Tip

Saturday, February 22nd, 2003

Hello All,
I really think that regular exercise is one of the most important
things to keep the weightloss moving along. The problem is that it
can be boring and my choice has been walking. Aside from being
chased by the occasional dog or alligator, not much excitement. May
I suggest Books on Tape. They send you a whole unabridged book on
cassett tapes that make your walks fly by. They are on the internet,
easy to order and when you are done, just drop the prepaid mailing
box in the mail and you are done. If you want to try them out, most
libraries have them available for checkout.

Hi all. I have to share with those of you who can understand and
appreciate my success. Tomorrow is my 5 month anniversary and when I
weighed today, I had lost 101 lbs. I don’t post often, but this one
was definitely worth sharing. MDH is planning something special to
celebrate, but don’t know what yet. It’s to be a surprise. I’ve
been very good about going to the gym 4 times per week and believe
this is what has been helping. I can say I’m actually 1/2 way
there!!!!
