medical leave update

Monday, March 31st, 2003

Hi Jonathan
When I was still working, I was under the FMLA. It is definitely worth it.
This pretty much guarantees you that if you can’t work because of your problem,
it can’t be held against you. I had migraines……(which now I know, the
majority of my migraines was brought on by sleep apnea). I would wake up and be
unable to function….I couldn’t seem to concentrate on things and I would
sometimes doze off at my desk. My supervisor suggested I check into FMLA, and I
was so happy that I did. It meant that when I woke up in the morning, and if I
was hurting or couldn’t get going, I could call in and let them know, without
fear of losing my job. Please, please, please………go to your human
resources office and talk to them about this. It is SO worth it.

stretched stoma

Sunday, March 30th, 2003

I was wondering if anyone has had a stretched stoma. If so what did
it feel like? I will be 10 weeks post op tomorrow and I can eat way
more than I would like to be able to. I’ve lost 50 pounds so far but
I lost it all the first 4 weeks. I haven’t lost an ounce since 4
weeks and I’m so stressed. FYI, a large amount of food to me is all
of the eggplant from the Olive Garden’s eggplant parmesan dish. I
ate some salad and all of the eggplant (none of the pasta) and felt
comfortable. That scares me terrible. Obviously when I was first
pre op I couldn’t eat 1/4 of a scrambled egg. I’m concerned that my
stoma is stretched because so much food goes in comfortably so
early. Any input?

Eggs…

Sunday, March 30th, 2003

Hey All…
I have heard that eggs are not only good for protien, but also relatively
easy to eat. I I have tried scrambled eggs, and they sit in my tummy like
lead. Did anyone do better with hard boiled, poached, soft cooked?? I
really need some “soft” food ideas as soup and yogurt is getting

>Losing Inches

Sunday, March 30th, 2003

I was reading the post about being measured as to how tall you are.
As we all age, we lose height, this can happen of course from
osteoperoisis (sp). But also alot of people didn’t know that it also
depends upon what time of day you are measured.
In the morning hours, you are taller, in the afternoon for some
reason we lose some heighth. I’m not kidding on this.
I’m 5 ft. 9″ and 39 yrs. old. I was at the doctor’s last year, and
measured 5 ft 8 1/2″ late one afternoon….I said “where did my extra
half inch go”? The doctor explained it to me, I though he was pulling
my leg, but he wasn’t.

side Effects

Saturday, March 29th, 2003

HNY to all.
I had Bilio Pancreatic Surgery in mid August
and my wieght loss has evened out over the last
month or two. I was 158.5kg and am now about
130kg.
My appetite is nearly as big as it was prior
to surgery, and although I have not lost
alot of wieght lately, I am not nearly
as concerned about that as I am about a
side effect.
Over the past month or so, I have noticed
alot of pimples appearing on mostly
my face and scalp. When i say alot i mean
100 plus!!. Some are barely noticeable while
others on my lip, chin and cheeks are as big

Energy Levels After Surgery

Saturday, March 29th, 2003

I don’t post to this list often but I was wondering about some
different experiences. I am two weeks out from open RNY and the
extreme lack of energy just hit me yesterday. I took a shower tonight
and had to sit down in the middle of it. Is this little energy normal?
Thanks

I’m up to the “Challenge”

Saturday, March 29th, 2003

Denise,
Your post really got me thinking about ways that I could improve my
health. I do excercise several times a week, although I’m not real
disciplined about when or how. Today I was on the treadmill doing my
1-1 1/2 mile. I started jogging/walking/jogging. It felt so good to
get really sweaty and a little uncomfortable. I realized that even
though I excercise regularly, I don’t push myself to increase my
routine as I should. So for now, my challenge to myself is to lift
weights 5 x per week, and use the treadmill at least 3 x per week.
Each time I will work until I feel I have actually asked enough of
myself.
Thanks- I needed that!

Milestones (long)

Friday, March 28th, 2003

Hello group!
Next Monday will mark my 8 month anniversary of reclaiming my life. As of Oct.
16th I had lost 125 pounds. My surgeon does not want to see me again until April
16th and I probably will not weigh again until then. Actually, the not knowing
helps me. I just do the “program” — eat small protein-filled meals, not too
much snacking, drink lots of liquid and exercise. Here’s some of what has
happened to me in the last 8 months:
Before May 7, 2001
A hole in my foot the size of a quarter that would not heal and threated my
limb.
Sleep apnea (I was in total denial of this) that robbed me of any energy, and
threatened my life (and others) by making me sleepy while driving.
Three oral diabetic medicines, insulin once a day, two anti-hypertensives, Lasix
and a whopping pharmacy bill (even with insurance).
Inability to walk even 25 yards without chest pains and breathlessness.

Losing Height

Thursday, March 27th, 2003

Hi, Gary, I have also lost inches in height….I have been 5′4 1/2″ all of my
adult life, and suddenly, when being measured a month or so ago for a new
job, they said that I am only 5′3″ tall…..really freaked me out! I take my
calcium every day…..have been taking Caltrate, which I THOUGHT was calcium
citrate, though recently heard that this was actually calcium
carbonate……am now taking calcium citrate with vitamin D, and will talk to
my pcp at the end of this month….any suggestions, anyone?
Happy new year to everyone!
