Losing Height

Hi, Gary, I have also lost inches in height….I have been 5′4 1/2″ all of my
adult life, and suddenly, when being measured a month or so ago for a new
job, they said that I am only 5′3″ tall…..really freaked me out! I take my
calcium every day…..have been taking Caltrate, which I THOUGHT was calcium
citrate, though recently heard that this was actually calcium
carbonate……am now taking calcium citrate with vitamin D, and will talk to
my pcp at the end of this month….any suggestions, anyone?
Happy new year to everyone!

Osteoporosis is possible after this surgery which is why you must be
diligent about vitamins and many people add a calcium supplement. As
morbidly obese we are somewhat protected from osteoporosis due to our higher
bone density however as we lose weight we become more at risk for it. You
may want to go for a bone scan and see where you are at. Also add a calcium
supplement to your daily vitamin needs and that may help.

I don’t know how likely this is, but since I myself have gone down over one
shoe size since my surgery- could at least part of the lost height be do to
a loss of fat deposits on the bottom of the feet? Just something to think
    about.

    Gary,
You don’t know how happy I was to read this post!! In Jan. 2000, when
I had my first consultation for WLS I measured in at 5′5″, 278 lbs.
It took until April 2001 to finally have my surgery (darn
insurance!), but as I lost weight people kept commenting on me
getting shorter. I insisted that I was the same, just that
I “looked” so much taller due to being so big.
Well, my school nurse measured me and sure enough, I am now 5′3 1/4″
I will see my surgeon for a follow-up at the end of January and I
intend to ask for my benefit. Daily I take: Centrum Vitamin,
sublingual B12, chewable Vit. C, liquid Iron and 3 chewable viactivs.

i need to respond because i am now 5′2 and a half”. i was 5,3 and a half
last year. i am down almost 50 lbs +/- and an inch shorter. when i think
back i amazingly seemed to grow an inch at a time that i had gained alot of
weight after being 5′2″ for a long time. in high school 30+ yrs ago i was
5′1″. i am willing to bet if i make my goal weight i’ll end up 5′ to 5′1″. i
think all the fat pumped up the height. while i have no scientific proof of
this my height has always fluctuated with my weight. jmho
