YES YES YES!! You should try to get your protein as high as possible
right after surgery. It aids in healing and hopefully you will be able to
keep your hair. I found it easier to get my protein where it needed to be
when I was on full liquids. I drank high protein low carb drinks and it was
relatively easy to reach my numbers. I only drank 4 oz in an hour and sipped
water throughout the day. I find that it is hard for me to meet my protein
numbers now that I eat real food. I don’t eat red meats and I only eat small
amounts at a time. I have now included tofu in my regular shopping there are
many good dishes I can make with that and it increases my protein 19g per 1/2
cup. The problem is I have a hard time consuming a full 1/2 cup. I hope
this helps.
Good luck to you.

Let me repeat one more time regarding hair loss — if you are going to lose
your hair you are going to lose it and even mega amounts or protein won’t
stop you from doing so. There are people that have done mega protein, zinc,
special shampoos and conditioners, biotin, vitamins and everything else and
still lost hair. Then there are some who just went with what they had and
didn’t lose any. I was the latter category.

I’m in the first category. I worked my tail off keeping my protein intake
high and I still lost hair. Lots of hair. Fortunately for me, I have super
thick hair. So even though I have lost tons of it - I still have hair! LOL.
My hair is now about the thickness of a normal persons hair - which I kind of
like. It’s much easier to style and takes half the time to dry it. I wish
there were a way to keep it this thin!
According to my surgeon, there are many things that factor into whether you
will lose hair or not besides the protein intake. The protein is certainly
important, but some people lose hair just from the stress and trauma of the
surgery itself. My mother had neck surgery and lost hair.

Thanks so much for the comments on hair loss. Some people lose their hair
when rapid weight loss occurs and others don’t. I’ve lost my hair five times
and each time it’s grown back healthier than before. Each time I’ve lost it
was during periods of rapid weight loss. Sometimes that was on high protein
diets, others it was not high protein. Only common denominator was the
weight loss. Each and every time it has fallen out for about three months,
then rested for about a month and then began to regrow.
Although it is unnerving when it is happening, this is not a bad trade-off
for the weight loss which has a much better probability of staying off!
