Searching for outpatient surgery
Does anyone know of a doctor, anywhere in the world, that does an
OPEN gastric bypass and the patient leaves the hospital within 24
hours?
Thanks so much

I had Open RNY and there was NO way I was able to leave
the hospital after one day. I cannot imagine a surgeon
allowing it. Certainly not a surgeon that I would want
in charge of my care. I was in for 5 days and really
needed that time to recuperate and rest. My incision is
less than 4 inches and I’ve been completely complication
free, but I am still glad I had those 5 days. If you
want a shorter hospital stay, investigate having it done
lap. But even then, I’m not 100% sure about a one day
discharge. This is MAJOR surgery, not something to be
rushed. Good luck.

No, and IMHO, that would be dangerous and irresponsible. I would run as fast
as I could from any surgeon who suggested that.

I had my Lap RNY and gallbladder removed on Aug 1st, 2001 at 7:30am and went
home the next day. I was up walking by 6pm on the day of surgery and had
ice chips around 3pm and water by supper time. They woke me up several
times in the night and I took a lap around the nurses station each time they
did that.
My care was top-notch at Abbott in Minneapolis. They made sure that I
tolerated the liquid diet and that things were moving though my system well.
I took a shower by myself the next morning and was dressed and ready to go
by the time my husband picked me up at 2pm. I felt discomfort, but no real
pain. I don’t feel as though I was “rushed out the door.” If I felt
uncomfortable about leaving, I have no doubt that I could’ve stayed another
day.
I was on a special floor where all of the WLS patients go and the nurses
were absolutely terrific.

Hi there,
I had outpatient open rny. My hospital stay (not including the surgery
itself) was 23 hours. And I was fine. And I was ready to go home. However,
my doctor has a very strict pre- and post- op regimen that you have to be
willing to follow. His name is Dr. Yasrebi and he’s head of surgery at
Memorial Hospital Jacksonville. He’s done 750 open rny’s during his practice
and never lost a patient. I’m two months out and have had no complications,
no problems. I was back at work two weeks after surgery.

There’s just no way. The first 24 hours after open surgery is a total loss.
You’re barely conscious for any length of time. There are drainage tubes,
an IV, and some people have a catheter too. By day 2 you’re encouraged to
get up and walk. A trip to the bathroom feels is a lonnnnnnng excursion!
And then there is the pain medication. Some people do better than others
here but I had Demerol shots every 3 hours until I went home.
There’s also the liability factor to consider. You’re at risk for
complications (blook clots, leakage, etc) from the surgery and the
anaesthetics. After surgery they monitor your heart, BP, pulse, breathing,
blood gases, and everything else. Even with a home health aide you can’t
get that kind of care.
This is major surgery. If you decide to go forward with this, prepare to
spend some time in a hospital!

Bari - I am sorry to burst your bubble, but I had an Open RNY and I was out of
the hospital 22 hours after my surgery was completed. I was walking three hours
after the surgery was completed. My surgeon requires that you walk every two
hours around the entire hospital floor two times, this is equivalent to 1/8 of a
mile. I had nothing attached to me 5 hours after the surgery was completed, no
catheter and no IV. My surgeon is looking for another surgeon who has the same
success.
IF ANYONE KNOWS OF ANOTHER SURGEON, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
Thanks so much

I had lap RNY on 10/25/01 and was in the hospital for 2 days. There
is no way I would have been ready to go home in 1 day. I had to wait
until after I had a leak test on Friday (surgery was Thursday) before
I could start on liquids, and I didn’t have anything else until
Saturday AM when they gave me Ensure. I started walking on Friday,
after they took my Foley catheter out. I was surprised that I was
discharged after 2 days as I had expected to be in 3-4. After being
in surgery for 6 hours, I don’t think 2 days was unreasonable.
