New to group, saying Hello!

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2003

Hello! I just joined the OSSG today and I though I’d say hello. I
had my Open Roux-en-Y and Cholecystectomy on November 8th 2001.
I am personally dealing with what looks like many of the same issues
and having many of the same wonderful accomplishments as many of you.
I’m looking forward to talking to and seeking advice from people
who’ve been through this.
Thanks for this wonderful resource!

comfortable way to sleep

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2003

Hi,
I am 10 days post op. I have been sleeping on our couch because it was close
to the bathroom. I have finally made it upstairs to my own bed, but I can’t
seem to find a comfortable way to sleep. Any suggestions??? Kim

Restaurant eating

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2003

Hi,
I had surgery on 1/30/02 and I was wondering if anybody knows of a
place or book that will tell me about restaurant food. I found some that
listed calories and fats but not sugars. How do you know if the food item
is within our sugar level?
I am nervous about eating out and not knowing if I will tolerate the
sugars. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

pseudo tumor cerebri

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2003

thanks for the positive info on the hair loss. I’m new here, not scheduled
for surgery, but am seeing surgeon, internal medicine doc, and the
psychologist in a couple of weeks. A couple of things I’ve read here scared
me a little, but if I don’t have the surgery, I will go blind. I have PSEUDO
TUMOR CEREBRI, and the Nurologist said he doesn’t have alot of info, cause
it’s one of those conditions you don’t hear much about. However, he does know
it’s directly associated with weight. I’ve been struggling with my weight
for 4 years now, up and down, up and down, only it’s caused some irrepairable
vision damage. Anyone else out there with PSEUDO TUMOR CEREBRI, and having
to have the surgery? Just curious

Losing slowly

Monday, July 21st, 2003

If you are just 3 weeks post-op and you’ve lost 16 pounds-that’s
great! You are going thru a very fast weight loss. Your body is not
used to losing so fast and it’s saying-’slow down’. It’s quite the
norm to see a plateau. Your body has to adjust. It’s also better to
lose slowly. I went thru the same thing and had an early plateau.
Just hang in the there. You’re doing great. All of a sudden you’ll see
a big loss because your body has reset itself. You’ll see this
happening quite often along the way. It’ll come off!!! Just continue
to follow doctor’s orders and you’ll do fine.
Good Luck!

Losing slowly and depressed

Monday, July 21st, 2003

Hi everyone,
I have been lurking on this site for several months, and have really gotten
alot of very valuable info from everyone…Thanks!
I have a question….I had my lap rny on Jan 25, so I am just a little over
three weeks post op, and I am really depressed! I have only lost 16 pounds,
and was wondering it that’s normal? I started out at 264 and I’m 5′5″. I
was losing steadily the first two weeks, and this week I have only lost one
pound. I am a worry wart by nature too, so I of course think there is
something wrong with me, or the surgery didn’t work for me. I have also been
nauseous alot this week. I have not strayed from my dr.’s orders at all, but
I am finding it so hard to stick with it, when I am not seeing the results it
seems that most others have.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just want to know that I am
not alone!
Thanks,

Horrible Saturday

Monday, July 21st, 2003

Yesterday was a day from hell for me. Got up feeling great, had a small
protein drink and then at 12 noon went out for lunch. I ordered a scrambled
egg in the restaurant and divided it into three tsp. spoon full. I ate two
very slowly and decided I wanted no more. Had one sip of water before and
nothing during the meal.
The rest of the day from 12 -6pm was agony, I keep vomiting and such bad
pains in my stomach. Tired water, chicken broth, popsicle and nothing felt
better.
Finally at 6:30-pm went to the ER, and was given an IV of Raglan and Pepcid
and fluids. The reason I went to the ER beside pain was I was worried about
dehydration. IV seem to work well, they also did a barium swallow to make
sure I was not blocked…..all looked fine.
The ER doc said it might be stress (personally–I don’t agree, but I find a
lot of times they use that if they cannot find a reason). I left at 9;30
with orders to take clear fluids and pepcid for a few days.

Help with post-op support

Monday, July 21st, 2003

Thanks everyone for posting. I really need good
information on WLS and post-surgery diet. There is no nutritionist or
support group affiliated with my surgeon.I am scheduled for an open
RNY on April 2 in Bethlehem, PA. I’m looking for a support group in
the Lehigh Valley, PA. If you know of one or can talk on the phone
contact me at carol_arre@….

pregnancy update….i promised :o)

Sunday, July 20th, 2003

Hi All,
Just wanted to keep you posted on how I’m doing with the pregnancy. For
those that don’t remember I’m 17 months out of surgery and have lost 223 lbs
(3 this week). About 2 weeks out of surgery developed PE’s and again 2 weeks
after that.
I went for my first gyn appointment and addressed some concerns that I have
with my Dr. First of all I’m so scared of either hernia or problems with my
staples during delivery (talk about jumping the gun..hehe) also I had to go
for an endoscopy about 3 months ago and was told my stomach is EXTREMELY
tiny, so nutrition for the baby is another concern. The Dr. feels that by
the time I give birth (september) I’ll be a full 2 years out of surgery and
not to worry myself about delivery complications. As of right now she
doesn’t seem very concerned about the nutrition….she told me to eat as
often as I can. At this point I don’t have to see a nutritionist but if
weight gain becomes a problem then I’ll have to go. It’s funny because I’m
