Dolly - Psych Eval
Hi Dolly,
I just did this a few weeks ago. My insurance company or surgeon, I’m not sure
which, requires a psych eval, too. Having never talked to a psychologist or
psychiatrist before, I was a little nervous about it. The psychologist asked me
a
few questions like, how long have you been overweight ( all my life ), have you
ever
been treated for depression or an anxiety disorder, has anyone in your family
committed suicide, and have you given a lot of thought to this surgery. Then he
put
me in a room alone with a psychological test. It was like the old year end
achievement tests at school. Fill in the little circle with a number 2 pencil.
My
choices were False, Somewhat True, Mostly True, and True. The questions, for
the
most part, didn’t apply to me or anything to do with bariatric surgery or
obesity.
They were statements like, “I have to be high to have fun.” I said False!
There
were many like that. “The only people I really trust are my fellow drug users.”
I
thought, well, I think I’m going to pass this thing. Your mileage may vary, and
really, I hope there are better psych evals out there than this one. IF I had
been
wanting the surgery for the wrong reasons or if I was a likely candidate for
severe
post surgical depression, no one would know from the psych eval, that’s for
sure.
Good Luck to you!
Vicky
