Nutritional analysis

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Does anyone know of a website that does free nutritional analysis of recipes,
etc? I have found several that will do it for a fee, but I’m more interested
in a freebie! LOL

Support Needed from Family

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Hi everyone!
I’m new. :-) My name’s Emily, I’m 23, and I live in Minnesota. I’m
going to my doctor tomorrow to hopefully get sent to a surgeon! I’ve
done loads of research, and I know this is the right decision for
me. I have lots of questions, but one really important one:
I will need A LOT of help convincing my family that it’s a good
idea. I’ve talked to my “fat” cousins and aunt, and they’ll support
me as long as I do my research and make an informed decision (no
problem there!). My parents are another issue. My step-mom has
never had problems with weight in her life (my mom did, but she died
several years ago). My dad is a little overweight, but probably no
more than 20 pounds. Both my parents (especially my dad) think that
RNY is “taking the easy way out”. I think that this is a huge
decision I’ve made about taking my life under control. My parents’
support is REALLY important to me, partially because I live with

I’ve got my date

Tuesday, September 30th, 2003

Hello Group, Well it’s been a long hard haul, a little over a year
now but I’m finally there. My surgery has been approved for the 24th
of April, by Dr. Murr in Tampa. I want to thank all of you for your
knowledge, experience, and questions. Without this website I would be
clueless. Now I can go in with the confidence that is needed to
endure this life changing procedure.
So keep up the good work and keep those postings coming in,
you just don’t know how much you can affect a persons life. I know
because it has affected mine tremendously, and I am forever
greatful.
Thankyou

linda and b12

hi linda.
b12 has been making me scared and nuts. alot of confusion out there about
it. the gov’t says the rda is 6 mcgs/day.
the dr who did my wls is in the category of a great technician and no
followup/support - so i have found the fabulous rachel, my nutritionist who
works exclusively with another wls surgeon. this dr insists on us taking b12
pill or shot, the shot preferably and for life.
ok, so it’s a tiny pink thing but just one more pill to take and i am taking
it. i am resisting the shots ( my b12 levels have been ok so far- i’m 10 mos
out and down 140 lbs) but i won’t take the chance of messing with b12 - the
risk is not worth it.
and since it appears that the drs demands re b12 vary, and you are so low and
it is not worth messing with, could you take the shots till your levels

Diet Pop in Colorado/Baron-Congrats!

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

Debbie:
I can say that I gave up sodas/pop cold turkey 30 days before surgery. Boy,
I can say that it was not easy! Everytime I say a Coke machine it was
calling my name….”Aw, just 50 cents and you can drink me”…talking about
having withdrawls (all in my head mostly). I had surgery in Feb 2001 and
have not had any sodas since Jan 2001. I drink alot of Crystal Light and
Diet Snapple along with lots of water. Do I crave a Coke or
Pepsi?…..no…..cause I don’t even want to chance any damage that the
carbonation might do to my pouch. This is just my choice and I saved alot of
money now since my whole family has given up drinking them.
Baron, congratulations on all your success. Happy “New” Birthday and I see
that you lost some more weight…Good for you!!! I have followed your story
for the past year (from a lurker’s view) and also visited your great web
site. Hang in there and enjoy your day of celebration.
While I am here, I might as well update everyone with my story. I started

post op recovery time

Saturday, September 27th, 2003

Hi everyone,
I have been a “lurker” on this list for a couple of months now. I have been
researching WLS since October and finally had my PCP refer me to a surgeon in
Jan. I got my approval from the insurance company yestarday and although I have
not been scheduled for surgery yet, I am told I should hear within the next week
and I will have the surgery before 4/15. Anyway, now that it is becoming a
reality, I am starting to prepare. I am definatly nervous (still praying I am
not the 1% fatality or serious complications)
My question is for those of you who have had the surgery (lap-RNY) how long were
you out of work afterward. I am a computer engineer so sit at my desk most of
the day, and i can get up and walk around whenever I need to so it is not very
strenuous. I hear many say they are tired for weeks and need to take naps during
the day, is that the norm?
thanks

Post-Op DVTs…blood clots

Friday, September 26th, 2003

Is there anyone else out there who has had to be re-hospitalized after their
gastric bypass surgery for DVTs (blood clots)??? When I was 3 weeks
post-op, I was diagnosed as having extensive blood clots in my right leg and
admitted into the hospital for 7 days. As if you don’t feel alone enough
about having the GBS, I really feel isolated. I am trying to locate someone
else who is or has been “in my shoes”.
Thanks,

Does anyone know of any online training modules that will help me
keep motivated and eating more healthily. I find this so hard, even
now.

diet pop

Friday, September 26th, 2003

Debbie,
For years, I was a serious Diet Coke addict. I could
easily drink 2 liters a day. I cut down when I was preop
and now I very rarely will have a small amount, a couple
of sips. Maybe once or twice a month, if that. I’m
careful about getting rid of at least some of the
carbonation. I hope I’m not doing myself any harm but
this is really the only thing from my preop days that I
miss. Good luck to you.
