Friday Night’s 20/20 TV Show
I get an email from Barbara Walters about the 20/20 TV show (I don’t know her
personally, anyone can sign up for the emails at the website) and there is going
to be a segment on this week’s show (Friday night at 10 p.m. EST on ABC - check
your local listings) about WLS. Here is the relevant excerpt from the email:
“I have been avoiding the scale all week because of the Saudi Arabian trip; the
food was delicious and all-too plentiful. I am holding my stomach in, but I am
not ready yet to take the step that Deborah Roberts will tell you about on this
week’s program: She reports on a family who banded together with friends â all
of them morbidly obese â to have their stomachs surgically stapled. It was a
decision of last resort, and Deborah’s report is a wonderful story of
determination and success.”
By the way, Deborah Roberts is married to Al Roker (of the Today Show). Rumors
(and reports in supermarket tabloids) have it that Al Roker recently had WLS.
Not sure if that’s true (and it’s none of my business) but I hope it is because
I like him.

I don’t know when the or if the show will be re-run … but ELLE magazine had a
great article about this same family. I believe it was in their February 2000
issue. It is posted on their website, but I no longer have the specific web
address.

I saw the 20/20 show and read the ELLE magazine article. IMHO, I think the
article was more informative and gave more details about the GBS process. If
you have the website address for the ELLE article, you might want to post it for
others to read. I used to have it but deleted it after printing out the
article. I believe it appeared in the February 2002 issue.
