Digest Number 3834 (100 vs. 150)
I guess my problem with your logic is that you assume
that if you are ONLY 100 pounds overweight you haven’t
tried dieting. I myself have gained and lost 600
pounds in the last 12 years. I average a swing one
way or the other of about 45 pounds a year. This is
not good for me even if I was only 100 pounds
overweight. I’ve tried every diet (OK - so I didn’t
fall for too many of the TV ad diets), but weight
watchers countless times, behavior modification
programs multiple times under doctor’s supervision,
diet pills under doctor’s supervision, slim fast, low
fat, low carb, high protein, everything. My list of
tried diets was also quite long.
I too had my surgery through a program that required
me to lost weight before surgery to show my commitment
to changing my diet post-op. I have no problem with
that. I researched surgery for almost 2 years before
deciding to go through with it. At only 30 and 100+
pounds overweight, I felt like I was 70. I want to
have kids and be an active mother to them and be able
live long enough to see them get married and have
kids.
The fact is for me and probably a lot of people who
are ONLY ~100 pounds overweight are on their way to
weighing much more. I know I was. I have been close
to 150+ over at times. I didn’t need this surgery any
more or less at 285 than I did at 257. I was just in
a different place in my yo-yo.
Anyway, I guess what I’m saying too is that I really
don’t care that this surgery is becoming more popular.
I know I’ve probably contributed to a few people
starting to look into it. If they are willing to do
the research and make the committment, I hope that
every morbidly obese person has the opportunity to
have this surgery done. We all have the same thing in
common - we are morbidly obese. Differing degrees of
it yet, but we’re still all risking our health greatly
by not taking the weight off.
Anyway, I wish you well in your journey. I just hope
that you don’t ‘lobby’ too hard against people on the
lower end of the scale to not get the surgery. Please
don’t think that just because we didn’t make it to
300, 400 or 500 that we don’t have health problems and
aren’t capable to fully realizing the commitment this
requires or that we haven’t tried to diet. That’s not
the case at least for me.

Arrrrgh. This topic really chafes me. I realize everyone has and is
entitled to their own opinion, but for some reason it makes me really mad
when we start putting more restrictions on WLS. First off, 100 lbs is a good
baseline. Think of it, that extra hundred pounds makes you obese, not just
obese MORBIDLY obese. Anyone that is 100 pounds overweight has dieted.
this as a quick fix, and unscrupulous doctors are seeing this as a way to
make a name for themselves, and line their pockets with cash.<<<<<<<
I agree that we live in a very looks oriented society, BUT I am not sure I
have ever heard ANYONE going into having weightloss Surgery, say “This is my
quick fix!”. Never have I heard anyone that thinks this is EASY, and that
they do not have to work WITH the surgery. Nor, have I heard of these
Doctors that just try and do as many procedures as possible, without giving
any pre-op counseling or Post-op care. I am sure there are unethical Dr’s
Out there doing WLS…Just like there are unethical Dr.’s in All medical
fields. But if they are out there I have not heard about it.
There are guidelines that Dr.’s should follow regarding WLS, and I hope that
most Dr’s do follow them. But, WHY should we put more restrictions on this?
It may seem as though this surgery is becoming “faddish” to us because now
that we have had the surgery we are more likely to pick up on things on the
news, in books, and in magazines about WLS. Sorta like when we get a new
car…we start seeing them EVERYWHERE, lol.
This surgery is a lifesaver.
This surgery is incredible.
This surgery NEEDS to be accessible to as many Morbidly obese people who need
it, be them 100, 125, or 300+ lbs overweight.
Just another 2cents to add to the piggy bank.
