steroid question….
hey there…have a question for those of you who know
more than I about this stuff….. (Nurse hanging her
head in shame here…lol..I should know these things!)
anyhow…(and yes, I will pose this question to my
doctor when I see him)
I have asthma, and am pretty well controlled with
Advair, which is essentially a inhaled steroid…
Anyone know if this is allowed after WLS? My train of
thought says that since it is inhaled, that there
shouldn’t be a problem, since it pretty specifically
targets the lungs….
ALSO….what if my asthma flares up???? do they allow
you short term steroid use at all? Since that is
sometimes the only thing that snaps me out of a severe
attack, I would hope it is….

Hi dolly, I had pretty severe asthma before surgery
and that was my biggest concern about having surgery.
Some medications cause my breathing to tighten. I
remember my surgery day like it was yesterday (8/01)
but the details are sketchy. I believe I was told to
bring my inhalers to the hospital, but everyone had
breating treatments (like using a nebulizer) every few
hours. I got scared when I came out of recovery
because my breathing was tight and I felt I might have
an attack. The pulmonologist came in and they
administered steroids into my IV, which helped. I was
afraid to touch my steroid pump, I was certain that’s
what caused the breathing problems. Anyway, I’m happy
to say I seldom use my inhalers now. I had no
complications/pain or problems and recovery was pretty
easy. I’m now 6 lbs below the surgeon’s goal weight.
I’m not trying to lose anymore, just maintain. This
must be a very exciting time for you.
I have no regrets whatsoever. I just need to learn to
avoid the shopping malls :-).

Dolly I have asthma and take advair with no problems. I had surgery 1-22-02.
You can take your asthma med’s. after surgery with no problems. Warning
about morophinine (sorry for the spelling) pump, with asthma it can cause
your lungs to colapse. I had a hard time after surgery due to not being put
on demerol instead. I was so sick I was in a wheel chair and the list goes
on and on. I was healthy at 263 lbs. prior to surgery and came out real sick
and went from 6 med’s to 18, all due to my mild asthma. I was on the lowest
med’s for asthma until WLS. Lisann46038
