How do you stop?

Saturday, January 31st, 2004

I had gastric bypass surgery last April, and I have made habits of
all the eating
rules they gave us (except exercise). Now I’m past where I wanted to
be and I continue to slowly lose weight. I’m 119 and loosing,
looking bony and skinny. I’m down to a size 4 and even that is
getting to be big.
The nurse practitioner keeps telling that I”m doing great and that my
stomach will strech. While I wait for this to happen, I try to snack
often.
I NEVER thougth I would have this problem! After being overweight my
whole life, I never thought i would look this skinny. It doesn’t
even look good any more! Any help or tips would be greatly
appreciated.

crazy questions!

Friday, January 30th, 2004

I have a couple of crazy questions that I’d like to ask that I really have not
had a chance to ask to the Dr and/or people that have had the Open RoueNY at the
BTC in Columbus during my consult.
1 - I have a hard time swallowing pills let alone the horse pills that will have
to be taken after this surgery. (I was told prenatal vitamins and those are
huge). Just a little advil I have to chug water down to get it down. I know
you cannot chug anymore either when you drink after this surgery. How are you
all over coming that if you have the same problem I do with pills? Crush them?
YUK! but thats the only way I can think of.
2- Prior to surgery - what are some of the tests they run? I have heard a wide
range but they all vary it seems from Dr to Dr. I will be having this done at
Columbus BTC so the surgeon will most likely be Choban. Do any of you know what
tests she runs prior?

Distal? Types of surgeries???

Friday, January 30th, 2004

I have only researched the Open Rouen Y surgery - could someone please explain
these different types? Is Distal something else? What is the main surgery that
is recommended here in these groups? I had thought the Rouen Y was the best,
but I keep hearing so many other ones I feel to research out some more before
settling in.
Thank you,
Kim

My pictures are up from the Country Music Maratho

Friday, January 30th, 2004

If you all would like to see my pictures from the marathon
the site is www.cmmarathon.com go to photo gallery select
the Country Music Full and Half Marathon then enter my bib
number which is 19335. After you select the Country Music Full and Half Marathon
you have to
click on the Action Sports logo (where it says to order photos or
something like that) then you get to enter the bib number. I can’t say enough
about how this never
would have happened had I not gone through WLS.

Knoxville TN PCP?

Thursday, January 29th, 2004

Hi everyone!
I just joined this group last night. I have decided that I want to have WLS.
Now, I just have to get going on finding a PCP that will support it. My PCP
that I have had for years does not agree even with prescribing Weight loss
drugs so I KNOW she won’t go for WLS.
Does anyone know of a fat friendly doc in the Knoxville TN area that I could
start going to? I am 26, my weight is approximately 330 and I have other co
morbidities, such as borderline diabetes, high cholesterol and I am also
dealing with Postpartum Depression (Olivia is 9 months old) I know I will
probably have to go to Memphis or Nashville to actually have the surgery.
Just want to talk to someone off list that is in my area and find out what
all to expect, etc.
Thanks alot and good luck to everyone on the list! I know that I am going to
enjoy being a part of this online community.

Doctor experiences

Thursday, January 29th, 2004

I was wondering if anyone has had prior experience with Dr. Louis Flancbaum of
the St. Luke’s Roosevelt hospital bariatric center or his team in NYC, NY. I’ve
already had an initial consultation with him and was very impressed with his
knowledge (he’s the author of The Doctor’s Guide to Weight Loss Surgery: How to
Make the Decision that Could Save Your Life) and his experience (about 1000
operations). While my instinct tells me he’s a terrific surgeon and what I’ve
read about him from other people say he’s top-notch, I thought I’d just ask the
group for a “2nd opinion” before making up my mind 100% to go ahead.
Thanks.

Cold vs. Hot

Thursday, January 29th, 2004

I am a couple of days shy of being 3 wks post-op and wonder if any of you
have a clue what this means.
Pre-op, I was hot all the time. We set the air at 68 degrees and I’d still
be hot. Simple housework, I’d sweat. When I worked out I would break a sweat
in 3 minutes. One of the reasons I was so glad to get the surgery, was
because I was sick and tired of being hot all the time.
Now with only 16 of my 150lbs gone, I am getting cold all the time. Last
night my husband came home and it was 77 degrees in the house and he said,
“How could you not be hot? It’s sweltering in here?” When he turned on the
air, I had to get under a blanket. When I worked out yesterday for 30
minutes, I barely had to blot my head with my towel. Usually after 30
minutes, I am drenched to my underwear.
I have had numerous thyroid tests (before surgery) and have no thyroid
issues.
I have multiple theories.

How much can I lose?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

I am pre-op. I have heard surgeons say that people can expect to lose
50-75% of their EXCESS body weight and that surgeons consider a loss
of 50-60% of EXCESS weight to be a success. I don’t understand why we
can’t expect to lose 100% of our excess body weight if we follow all
the directions and exercise, etc. I have more than 400-500 lbs. of
EXCESS body weight that I need to lose. Even if I use the maximum
percentage estimate of 75%, that means I would always remain over 100
lbs. OVERWEIGHT. Now, of course, being 100-125 lbs. overweight is far
better than being 400-500 lbs. overweight but I would still be
considered morbidly obese. What prevents us from “going all the way”
down to a normal weight? Surely, it can’t just be the remaining skin
that accounts for the excess 100-125 lbs. Please tell me I don’t have
to go through all this, do everything that is recommended, and still
remain over 100 lbs. overweight.
