Many thanks from Brenda, the prodigal OSSGer!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

Hi Folks–especially those of you who responded to my previous post:
Thank you all so much for the warm welcome back and the encouragement during my
2 month stress- and snacking-induced plateau! You really know how to encourage
and give a kick in the pants at the same time! It is also good to know that
many of us experience the return of the munchies at 6-8 months out, and that,
after a brief melee, one can regain control and get serious again about why we
went through all this risk and trouble in the first place.
Several of you have strongly recommended stopping snacking on anything that does
not have significant protein and lowish carbs. I have been doing this for the
past week, and it definately helps. I have noticed that I get a bit queasy if I
do eat a sweet, like I used to at 3-5 months out. It’s reassuring to know that
avoiding sweets for a while can allow you to regain some of that biological
advantage affectionately known as dumping that many of us have early out and
lose as we test the limits. I also agree with those of you who recommend not
snacking between meals at all. I may have to go there, but so far, so good on

WLS Coach

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

Hi everyone!
I am beginning a coaching practice for those who have gastric bypass
surgery.
What is a coach, you ask? Good question! A coach is sort of like a
cheerleader, friend, and adviser all rolled into one. It seems to
me that the year after surgery is one of the hardest - emotionally
and physically. Having someone who has been there and done that
walking the path with you could be very helpful. Just FYI, I am 4.5
years post op RNY and have moderated OSSG for almost all of that
time, have worked extensively with my surgeon’s support group and
edited the newsletter for two years.
I would like to find 3 post ops who are willing to work with me for
3 months (free!) and help me get some experience from it and get
coaching along the way.
The process usually involves 1 half hour phone conversation a week

I am new here…. and have questions….

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

I found this site a week or so ago… and I can tell you that it has
been enlightening reading all that has been thru here since…
I am scheduled for pre-op testing on Thurs May 8th….. but it has
been months since my first appt with my Dr..
I am here in Syracuse area… and my surgeon is Dr Halverson…
Anyone here know him?
From the people I have talked with that do know him… he is very
good.. and very strict.
In fact he would not even consider doing surgery on me until I got
the eating routine down…. And his way of doing it is chewing every
bite 25 times and waiting 5 minutes in between each bite.
This took a long time to do - for I am a big eater… and eating a
full meal at this rate takes over 2 hours.<Grin
I also have the date to talk with the surgeon regarding the testing
on May 28th. So I am assuming that - if all the tests go alright -

I got a pcp!

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

Hi everyone. I just wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions on finding a
wls friendly pcp.
I printed out the list from my insurance website and started calling them all
asking how their doctors feel about wls.
I ran into quite a few *nasty* office workers, but that is par for the course. I
found an office that has 2 female pcp’s, both are pro-wls, both have years of
experience, and both have referred patients to my surgeon of choice! They are
both actively involved in wls patients continuing care! My appointment is on May
20, so we will see how it goes!

slowley but surely…another step closer

I just got done talking to a very nice lady that takes care of medical
clearances at btc columbus, and she has gotten everything they needed for me.I
was surprised to hear from her. I had bothered her yesterday, and again this
morning leaving a message for her. She called me back in about an hour to let me
know she had gotten everything and passed my file on down the line. Right now
my file is on the doc’s desk. When he signs off, it can go to the scheduler in
mich. Slowly but surely I’m getting closer to the end of this part of my
journey. I know that this is going a lot quicker for me than for a lot of
y’all, but it still feels like forever to me. I’m just a little impatient.
That’s it for now, I just wanted to tell somebody, and Cassandra’s not home.
Later, Kyle…

hi regarding the protien shakes

Monday, January 26th, 2004

The only way I could ever get it in was to buy the plain protien powder you can
buy it at your local health food store. I made my shakes with 1/2 cup of orange
juice 1 banana and 1/2 cup of strawberries you can use frozen ones and a few ice
cubes it tastes like a fruit smoothie you cant even taste the protien powder. so
try that one and see if that works. good luck and have a great day. Heather
