A post from a prodigal OSSGer–8 months out tomor

Monday, January 26th, 2004

Hi Everyone!
It’s been over 6-8 weeks since I have read postings regularly, an I
really can see what the lack of support can do to one’s resolve. I
have been snacking more and haven’t lost but a pound or two in two
months. I feel like a prodigal daughter coming home, hoping for a
warm and encouraging welcome (hold the fatted calf…although, more
protein would be a good idea about now!).
The snacking and my absence has been due to big changes in my life.
Dear hubby got his dream job in WV, and we are moving. We made
several trips to WV (a 12 hour drive) to find me a job, and then a
house. I found it very hard to find healthy foods en-route, and
didn’t have the time or presence of mind to buy protein snacks to
take with me. When I got back, the carb snacking at convenience
stores continued, and I lost little to no weight. Exercise has been
zilch, too with all the packing, painting, and cleaning the

A New(Old) drug?

Monday, January 26th, 2004

NBC news tonight said a drug called Leptin is under clinical trial to aid
weight loss and prevent re-gain. Leptin (a hormone) helps fight the yo-yo
dieting beast. The report said the more diets you’ve been on, the harder it
is to lose weight, because your metabolism adjusts. Your body regains the
weight plus a few more pounds as a survival instinct to help fight the
deprivation. It said Leptin fights that and helps people lose more weight
when they diet. Gonna take a closer look..maybe a clinical trial. I did
many “fasting” type diets in the 80s & 90s and would see a dramatic drop,
but then guess what happened? Anyone? Anyone?

help! can’t stand the protein drink

Monday, January 26th, 2004

Hello Group:
Got an question. How do you guys stand the protein drink. I have been off
it almost 1 1/2 years and I’m almost 3 yrs post op in Jan. They have change
the Pro Complex and now I can’t stomach drinking it. I just bought a bottle
of the chocolate and it taste so awful. Does any one know how to dress up
the taste so we can stomach it. I thought of adding peanut butter to help
the taste. I don’t know what I’m going to do to get down the protein. I
need any suggestion on how to get this stuff down.
Thanks,
Marcie

dry hair

Sunday, January 25th, 2004

Do any of you take suplements specifically for dry hair? I have found recently
that my hair is very dry, almost as if I no longer have any natural oils in it.
Strange. I have tried tons of protein pac conditioning treatments, and hot
oils, and was wondering if someone could suggest something else to try that
might actually work. I am still pre-op (for another 3 weeks) and am afraid that
after surgery it could just get worse so I would like to get a handle on this
now if possible.
Thanks,
Lori

Dr Choban? Ohio? NEW!

Sunday, January 25th, 2004

Hello I am still awaiting approval after 2 years of fighting
insurance. On May 14th I’ll get an update on the insurance ordeal.
I have fought so long that the insurance company is rewriting the
portion of the manual that deals with WLS so that it will not
liberalize this coverage and allow people to gain approval easier.
The decision will be made on 5/14/02. If approved, I can set my
date. I am wondering if anyone had had Dr Choban as a surgeon??? I
am not sure if I am comfortbale with her, but then it may just be
her personality. She is nice but I am not sure how good her follow
up is with her patients. Please inform me if anyone has had her.

salmonella

Saturday, January 24th, 2004

Hi Everyone!
I have a question. I had my lap rny on Jan 25th and went to the Dominican
Republic 2 weeks ago. When I got back from my (TOTALLY AWESOME trip with
just my husband and no kids) vacation I was feeling fine for 4 days and then
ended up in the hospital with severe diarreah and stomach cramps! Long story
short…I was there for three days and it was finally discovered on the day I
was coming home that I had salmonella. I was freaked!!! I was really scared
that because I have less intestines than most people that I could be sicker
than others or possibly die. I called my surgeon when I got home from the
hospital and he agreed with everything that had been done to me in the
hospital, but I just want to know….IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE WHO HAS HAD
THIS SURGERY AND THEN LIVED THROUGH SALMONELLA???? Please write and let me
now! I am so hoping that I will be ok!
Thanks for always being there for me and my paranoid questions! You guys are
the greatest!

Hair dye

Saturday, January 24th, 2004

Susan,
I colored my hair recently, even though it had been falling out. I
used a Revlon hair color, and it seemed to work fine. My hair was
looking very bad because the gray at the roots made it look thinner
than it was.
A hairdresser who had lost her hair due to chemotherapy clued me in
to the Nioxin product line. I purchased the cleanser and the scalp
treatment, and I have had no hair loss since I started using it. I
really think that it helps a lot.
I am not recommending that you dye your hair — just sharing that my
experience went okay. I AM recommending Nioxin, however, which I
purchased at Master Cuts.
Best of luck!
Regards,
Cheryl

SECOND THOUGHTS? HELP!

Saturday, January 24th, 2004

Courtney,,
I’ve even been hospitalized for my anxiety disorder– i take Paxil and Adivan
– got through surgery without blinking an eye — knew surgery was the right
thing — just be sure of your mindset — I will warn you– hormones from
rapid weight loss after surgery made me almost crazy for a week till they put
me on a big dose of Xanax,, (sp) ,, just make sure you’re prepared and
you’ll be fine. Im 160 lbs lighter — still have anxiety disorder,, but one
of the happiest people you’ll meet.
