Afraid Of Surgery

Wednesday, February 25th, 2004

Hi Jazmin,
First of all, calm down. Don’t be afraid of what you’re doing. We were
all nervous in getting this done. I weighed 317 pounds, and had a fatal
brain disease from being so overweight.
This surgery saved my life and sanity. I was so tired of being fat
and looking and feeling awful.
Sure, the first few months is a time f learning after wls. I’d get
frustrated because I couldn’t take a big bite, or drink with meals, etc.
I got over it, and hey, am cheap to feed now, LOL. !!
The biggest part and most important, is doing this surgery for YOU.
Not your friends, not your family, etc. This is for YOU. There will be
people you’ll meet after you have wls (if you do have the surgery) who
will say “Oh I knew someone who had that surgery and gained all their
weight back”, or something else, etc. I tired of hearing the negative
egarding this surgery. I stopped telling people.

Hot Damn, Got me a quick date. Only 3 1/2 weeks away. Just got off the phone
with the scheduler in Mich, and got a date for june 10. We had to do some hoop
jumping to be able to make it, but we did it. 3 months from first appt to
surgery, that’s not to bad. I don’t know how I got so lucky, but I am glad I
did. Just wanted to rave a little bit, Kyle…

Jazman,
Only you can know if you are ready for this surgery. Maybe it is too fast.
Maybe you need to postpone it until you have done more research. I’m not
going to tell you to just go ahead with your surgery and everything will be
fine. I will tell you though, that what your friend is going through is
perfectly normal. I went through a time when I was depressed and was feeling
much the same things that your friend is feeling. Not to the extent that I
regretted my surgery, but the first 3 - 4 weeks after surgery are the
toughest. My social life is perfectly normal now…..only it’s normal like
I’m a thin person, that’s the great part. I’m not out of control anymore and
I don’t live for eating…..I eat to live instead and I go to social
functions to enjoy the the company of my friends….not to see how much food
I can stuff down my throat. So search your soul, Jazman, and make sure that
you are ready to take on this life changing surgery and make sure you are
ready to accept the risks involved. If you are, know that this surgery can

re surgery coming up

Tuesday, February 24th, 2004

HI melissa I am going in on sat to have an open rny proximal. My surgeons
support group had a group of us hypnotized and we have a tape we listen to.
from what I under stand we even have our earphones on in surgery with the
tape playing. we also had to listen to it once or twice a day for about 2
weeks, if you doctor doesnt’ have this kind of support in his group, maybe
you can get a relaxation tape and play it might help and certainly can’t
hurt. you would be amazed at what you can store in you subconsious. just an
idea’

Barbara,
Fantastic! The part about falling down reminded me of an experience I had
last fall. I was playing tennis with a friend and decided to really
haul-ass and make a shot that was in reality maybe a little harder to get to
then I thought. I made it, but started to lose my balance in the process.
I was running/falling/running (I could swear in slow motion). Gravity
finally won out and I hit the court pretty hard, rolled and threw my arms to
the sky. My friend came running over to help me- thinking I was crying.
No, I was laughing. Big booboo on my knee and it hurt like hell, but I was
THRILLED that I could move like that! Finally I was falling down because I
was doing something daring!
Tomorrow I will get my bike out. You made it sound like so damn much fun.
Thanks,
Lisa Bennett
