New post-op is HUNGRY
Hiya, everyone!
I just had an open RNY on May 17, and I’m already down 13 pounds.
(Hooray for me!) But I find that I’m very, very hungry. I’m sipping
on water constantly, and I’m on soft, bland foods. But I’m hungry!!
Anyone else felt this?

Hi,
I don’t have any answers for you but I had a lap RNY done on 5/13 and I feel
like I’m starving all the time too. I’m starting to eat more solid foods and
that has been helping but I find I’m afraid to eat too much of anything new in
case I get sick so I’m hungry pretty quickly.
I thought it was strange too, most people talk about how they aren’t hungry at
all in the beginning.

I swear. The same thing happened to me, but it went away at 2 1/2 weeks post
op. I don’t know what it is about, but other people told me this would
happen and I doubted them, but they were right. I had to measure everything
I ate the first 3 weeks to make sure I wasn’t getting too much. Now I don’t.
I eat less now than I did two weeks ago. I have heard many possible
explanations for this, but who knows?
Also, according to some info posted by Ray, we will have to start dealing
with the hungries again sometime between 3-6 months.
You know, after awhile deluging yourself with all the post-op quirkies, this
whole post op lifestyle starts to seem pretty freaky .
It’s no longer just you, but you and your pouch. Don’t get me wrong….I am
thrilled…but it is still all kind of strange.

YES. That is soo true. Well, I am just speaking for me. I am now a few days over
7 months postop. Hunger is definitely back. I would like to say a lot of it is
head hunger–and sometimes, it IS, but here lately I have been having some
extreme feelings of hunger. Like I’ll eat, then 2-3hrs later I will feel hunger.
Water doesn’t help, even tho it does for some people. I think it might make me
HUNGRIER! B/c I’m thinking of food and how much I don’t like water…lol. I just
want to let yall know you aren’t alone if you’re hungry! Today I ate 3 meals and
2 snacks. 1 snack was popcorn another snack was a slice of cheese and some
crackers. Yesterday I got hungry and I chewed gum to avoid eating…and I felt
bad so I don’t know if that was a good solution. It seems we go from one problem
to another eh? I wasn’t concerned about eating until I have sorta stopped losing
weight in the past week. I went on vacation for a week, then returned home
excited about weighing b/c I hadn’t weighed in a full week…and my weight was
like almost exactly the same as when I left. I was in SHOCK. So I have been down
on life this week…and stressing about the quantity I can eat. My dad has had
surgery so I always inspect his plate to see if I ate more than him - which is
ridiculous since are different people with different surgeons and different
everything….but I still do it!!!
Sorry to vent. I just couldn’t shut up!

at almost five months out there are days when i feel hungry and days where i
don’t. as much as i try to keep an even keel i can’t eat when i am not hungry
and tend to eat one bite too many when over hungry so i have learned that this
is just what it is, a normal variation on hunger. i tend to eat more when i am
with other people or eating out. i eat much less when i am by myself. i’ve
decided to cut myself a break and as long as i am not hungry all the time or not
hungry all the time i think it balances out and i get what i need. so for now i
am listening to my body, lol. something i am learning to do by paying attention.
i sincerely hope it keeps on working as well as it has but understand it can all
change. just a thought.

Thanks, everyone, for all the nice replies. It’s SO good to know that
I’m not the only one to feel this way. You folks are the best!
