bad scare

Monday, April 26th, 2004

Just wanted to share my weekend with you all in hopes I can spare
anyone else from this same fate. This is a little long, so bear with
me.
It all started a week ago when I got diarreah. Not sure what
caused it….could have been stress, I was up for a new job. I got it
by the way…I’m the new Freshman Principal at our high school…say a
little prayer for me…lol. Also my son graduated that weekend and I
put on a party, etc. I ate too much fat and dairy at the party so
could have been the culprit too, or a combination thereof.
Anyway….it started. The following Thursday, 3 days ago I left for
Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to spend a leisurely weekend at my sister’s
house. The highlight of the trip was an Indigo Girls concert on June
7 at the Pittsburgh Arts Fair.
My diarreah got markedly worse on Thursday sorry for being so graphic but it was
like water and pretty much like an explosion and I was going to the bathroom 5

> Age question

Monday, April 26th, 2004

Lynn i am 62 years old and had my open RYN on Jan 31 2002. I am doing great
and know that without this surgery my medical problems would have only gotten
worse. I had sleep apnea, arthritis, high blood pressure and a few more items.
My legs had gotten so bad circulation and knees and today after losing 62
pounds I am feeling 100 % better. I still have some problems with my legs
swelling and a few minor things but i would do it again in a heart beat.
I have had 3 Dr’s tell me that they have had older patients than I and that
they all did very well.
I wish you the best of luck in your decision just remember it is your
decision. I have 6 children and a wonderful husband that were all very
fightened for me but gave me as much encouragement as they could.
I will be praying for you.

Cynthia,
I am a new post op but there was something about your posting which caught my
eye. You sAID YOU WERE LIMITING YOUR SWEETS. I believe that if you are
still in the process of losing you should not be having any sweets. My
doctor has everybody eating protein only until we reach 75% weight loss. You
seem to be eating as if you were finished losing. You must still eat to lose
weight and exercise. As I stated maybe I dont know what I am talking about
but it seems elementary that until we get close to our goal we need to still
be eating to lose…

How you feel right after surgery…and pain m

Monday, April 26th, 2004

This is a very individual reaction.
I didn’t have any tubes or even an IV after surgery. Pretty much all the
pain was a product of my horrible spine (horrible is, according to my
orthopedist, a sound technical description for the condition of my spine :-) I also had some (unexpected) big problems with breathing — I have one
collapsed lobe for no known reason — and I had just recovered from the flu
at the time of surgery. I was just not able to get enough oxygen and my
levels fell below 50% for awhile (causing an actual panic!).
With ALL of that, none of which were related to the RNY, I was back home by
Friday, having had the surgery on Monday. I had virtually NO pain related to
the RNY itself, except for some discomfort connected with the healing
incision. And, because I had been loaded up on steroids in the hospital to
control the asthma and to get the inflammation in my back down to a bearable
level, the incision healed very slowly compared to others who had the same
incision. Three weeks after surgery, I still had a big hole — and everyone

Age at time of surgery

Sunday, April 25th, 2004

I had the surgery just this past March 3, 2002, one week shy of my 55th
birthday. I weighed 239 when I was approved for surgery … 278 two days
after surgery following a monumental water weight gain (my legs looked like
tree trunks!).
This morning, the scale says that I weigh 200 lbs. and I actually look
thinner than that. I have my life back. If you can get approval, whatever
your age, go for it!

sugar free products

Sunday, April 25th, 2004

I just remembered something I had heard a while ago about sugar free products
that may be of help. Some sugar free products use sorbital. This has been
known to cause abdominal distress. I know of a couple of people ( a pack or two
a day of sugar free gum) who had some difficulty. “In some people, excessive
consumption may cause gastrointestinal symptoms, including laxative effects,
similar to reactions to beans and certain high-fiber foods. Such symptoms are
dependent upon an individual’s sensitivity and the other foods eaten along with
the polyol-containing product”.
I cna’t find the previous articles I had read but if I find them will pass
along.
Take care
Janet

Searching NZ

Sunday, April 25th, 2004

Hi
I’m Lesley and am new to the list from Christchurch,N.Z. I am having
a Fobi pouch op done on June 27th in Wellington,NZ(feeling excited
but freaking out too!). Not sure if this is a long shot but wondered
if there is any one else in Wellington who has had a gastric bypass
done who might read this and be open to visiting me in hospital while
I’m there?? Have done a lot of research on the net and talked to a
few lapbanders here in NZ but feel I need to connect with someone
having similar surgery to me.Am feeling really worried about dealing
with the emotional ups and downs in the week after surgery especially
being away from home and friends.
Here’s hoping
Cheers
Lesley
