Age question

Saturday, April 24th, 2004

Hi all:
I’ve been lurking here for sometime with great interest. My question is one
that I have never seen addressed. I am 68 years old, and would probably be 69
by the time I get approved, if of course, I can. I am interested in knowing
about people in their 60’s+ who have had this surgery, both successfully and
unsuccessfully and what problems they may have had. Actually, I want all the
ammunition I can get. So I will appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks,
Lynn

Down that road

Friday, April 23rd, 2004

Hi,
My advice would be if you haven’t tried sweets, don’t start. I “tested the
waters” and I wish I never had. It started with 5 peanut M&M’s and went
south from there.
I made a commitment to myself 3 weeks ago to go back on the plan and I
dropped 5 lbs immediately after a 3 month plateau.
I think a commitment to the plan long term is the best way to go. I have
been sugar free for 2 weeks and have realized what I was putting in my body
was not working. The plan works and I have to do the work (mentally and
physically) to make the best use of it. It’s not rocket science but
sometimes it sure feels like it.
My best to everyone.

Children & WLS

Personally, i agree. Back in January, my mother had her hip replaced, and i
took my 7 yr old with me to wait with my dad while she was in surgery, then
to see her (albeit briefly) when she was brought to her room. Reggie (my
daughter) had been well prepared for her grandma’s surgery, and she handled
it very well. i also brought her to visit a few days later, as well as once
or twice at the rehab faciility (which she still points out as “granny’s
second hospital” whenever we happen to drive by). It may have helped too,
that my daughter had surgery at age 5 for unresolved urinary reflux… so she
had a “reference point” when i explained about Grandma and her hip. A few
weeks afterward, my daughter had to stay at her grandparents for a few days
(no school), and she was the “official” cane bringer, and “grandpa getter”
for when granny needed something. She was quite proud of herself. Now with
me, i should be home about 24 hours after my surgery on Monday, so while she
wont come tothe hospital, she is going to be one of my “official” walkers

Just my own oppinion but I think it depends on the child. My 4 year
old neice came to see me and her mom after surgery but my 6 year old
neice would not have been able to handle it. Do what is best for the

letting me vent

Krista,
You have to make the best decision for yourself. Don’t let this so called
Dr’s opinion bother you in any way. It is your life and you must do what you
think is best.

NEED A LITTLE SUPPORT

Wednesday, April 21st, 2004

HELLO ALL,
MY NAME IS KRISTA. I DON’T POST OFTEN, BUT READ THEM FAITHFULLY
EVERYDAY. BUT AFTER TODAY I NEEDED TO VENT. I GUESS I’LL START WITH
A LITTLE INFO ABOUT ME. I AM SCHEDULED FOR SURGREY SEPT 4. I AM
30YRS OLD AND SINGLE. I AM A SONGRAPHER OR BETTER KNOWN AS AN
ULTRASOUND TECH. I WORK FOR AN OUTPATIENT IMAGING CENTER NEAR THE NJ
SHORE. SO HERE IS WHAT I NEED TO VENT ABOUT. TODAY AT WORK ONE OF
THE DOCTORS I WORK WITH CAME TO ME BECAUSE SHE HEARD I WAS HAVING GBS
IN SEPTEMBER AND SHE FEELS THAT I AM MAKING A HUGE MISTAKE. SHE
PROCEEDED TO TELL ME SHE HAS SEEN HORRIBLE RESULTS AND THAT SHE
FEELS THAT I HAVE NOT MADE ENOUGH OR SERIOUS ENOUGH ATTEMPTS TO LOSE
WEIGHT. SHE THEN PROCEEDES TO HAND ME A BOOK THAT SHE BOUGHT FOR ME
AS A GIFT ON HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT WHEN YOU HAVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF
WEIGHT TO LOSE. I LOOKED AT HER, SMILED, THANKED HER FOR HER CONCERN
AND TOOK THE BOOK. AS SHE WALKED AWAY MY BLOOD BEGAN TO BOIL AND I

Disappointed in Loss

Tuesday, April 20th, 2004

Do you really understand what “the weight loss slows
down” means? It doesn’t mean you go from losing 5
pounds a week to losing 2. (Not typically, anyway.)
You can go from losing 5 pounds a week to losing 5
pounds in six months, and that’s if you’re working at
it. I hit the wall at 10 months out, doing everything
I was supposed to, and I’ve lost maybe 2 pounds since
then (I’m over 14 months out now). It’s a struggle to
keep them off, though. This is a very common story
— everyone is a little different, but please don’t
think that if you can lose 70 pounds in the first
year, you should be able to lose 40 in the second
year, necessarily. It could happen, but it’s not the
version of the story we hear most often.
Losing 70 pounds is a great accomplishment! But

Living Will

Subject: Living Will for pre-op
Most hospitals have these forms avaialble for you to
sign if you wish when you check in. Just call and ask
to be sure.
***
Does anyone know where I could find a sample of one,
or a free form online or anything? Everyone keeps
telling me I should have one before surgery and I
suppose I probably better. I did a search and there
are just so many, I am wondering if anyone has done
this and knows where some good forms are at?
Thanks in advance.

HELP!! My psych eval killed my insurance approval

Tuesday, April 20th, 2004

Hi I have been patiently waiting for surgery and it has gone SLOW but
sure until now. I have been calling ins. co. every week for the past
few weeks and have gotten the runaround. The person who is working on
my file is: a. Out of the office for the day. b. Isn’t here right
now, can she return your call (yeah, right). c. I don’t see any
notes regarding your claim and my supervisor is not here now. Anyway,
last week the person I talked to (I started taking names) told me it
should only be a couple more days. That was last week. This week when
I called she said my file had been transfered to a different person
and she wasn’t there. I snapped and asked to talk to a supervisor. I
FINALLY got a straight answer-they didn’t have my psych eval.(I’m sure
it was faxed to them at the end of April but at least I had a fixable
problem). After numerous phone calls I finally got a response from the
ins. co. They said my psych eval showed that I wasn’t a candidate for
surgery at this time because I was DEPRESSED and would need to be seen
