1 year status

Wednesday, June 30th, 2004

I received a lot of help before surgery from this group and thought I
would add my 1 year story for those researching this surgery.
I had open RNY distal July 6th 2001. I am a male 44 years old weighed
330 at the time of surgery and was 5′8″. Today I weigh 178 and feel
great. I hike 3 or 4 times a week from 2 miles up to 11 miles. The
only complication I had was a large incisional hernia that was
repaired June 5th and was a cake walk compared to the other surgery.
I have had a blockage 1 time and that was the worst pain I have ever
had. It lasted 2 hours and was rough. Since then I have been more
carefull I am dense but like a dog, pain I understand.
There have been many mental and emotional challenges with this
surgery that I am still learning to deal with. I just returned from a
week at the beach with my family and was proud that I seem to have
finally learned how to order at restaurants and to be satisfied and
not to over eat, I order appetizers. The only foods that I have to

How motivated would you be to call after your diet
fails and you’ve gained the weight back plus to have
them update their records? :-) Good question, but the point I think Denise was making (and I agree) is that
we should get in on the register as successful weight loss. I want the word
to get out that wls is a viable and successful option albeit a last drastic
option….. at least it does work for soooo many more people than other
options and if someone is keeping statistics, I want wls to be part of those
stats. :0)

new/old

Wednesday, June 30th, 2004

Hi to all those who remember me. I’m Margaret from South Jersey. Had
Gastric By-pass on 12/10/98. Was pregnant by 3/99. Had lost 70lbs by
then and was thrilled by the weight loss, NOT the pregnancy. But I
lost 50 more during the pregnancy and had a perfect son in 12/99. (4
days before the mellenium!) So, I had lost a total of 120lbs and
felt great. By 12/2000 I found out I was pregnant again (a son, born
4 days before 9/11) and gained about 30, lost 20 after he was born.
My thing is, is it harder to loose weight after a certain amount of
time? I want to loose about 50lbs but I eat good, not by any
means “Normal!” and it just seems to hang around on my body.
Anyone in the same boat (No, I don’t want to sign on to OSSG
Pregnant. Not enough response, membership, whatever, but didn’t get
much of a response there last year.)
THanks to anyone who can help. Really, it’s not a pregnancy issue as
much as it is a time = weight loss issue.

So many people come and go on the boards, it’s often hard to keep up. I had
my surgery in Jan of 2000 and there was a different group of people hanging
about the boards back then. <smile
timers* to step forward and offer a hand up to this lagging spirit. I am at
the point where I can eat much more then I would like to be. I am snacking
and grazing more then I should be, and I really need a strong support
person/team to help me kick myself back into gear. I would love to hear
from some of my old crowd.. Amber in FL, Cindy Lou, Laura Pretorius, Lisa
Mahon Wechtenhiser, Rita in Vermont, Sue Barr….. we need to reconnect and
check in with each other. I would sure love to hear from you all! I need a
good butt kicking.. any of you up to the challenge?
Missing you guys,

Protein Parties at Home, and on the Road!!!

Tuesday, June 29th, 2004

Okaaaay, here goes!
It’s protein party time!!!
The first protein party will be at my house on the July 12 weekend.
Come one, come all, prepare to be scraped off the ceiling.
We have a clothing exchange, a huge swim spa, pool table, ping pong,
whatever. Bring hubbies, bring kiddies, we have 3.5 acres and can
chain the kids out in the yard, LOL.
I live in the DC area, about 60 miles west of DC. Write me for
directions.
Don’t be shy if you live far away, airfares are pennies right now.
Your health is more important than claiming distance :) Felissa, Glenn and I will be whipping up shakes by the dozen, in the
specific flavors that YOU decide. I can make a mean Wendy’s Frosty
reproduction. Like Starbucks? You ain’t seen nothing til you’ve
tasted ProBlendd55-bucks, lol.

30 months - 275 lbs

Monday, June 28th, 2004

Thirty months post-op with a Fobi Pouch and I am now down 275 pounds
from my surgery-day weight. I have lost from a size 70 to a size 48
waist! I feel wonderful. Eating is, and always will be, problematic
for me - I get nauseated easily - but who cares? Not me.
This is the best thing I have ever done. I weighed in at 557 lbs on
the morning of my surgery.

I’m so excited!

Monday, June 28th, 2004

Tonight we went grocery shopping for the first time since my surgery. I will
admit passing by the sweets and the regular food I used to eat was hard, but
worth it! I used to walk through the store with my husband, then go to the
car and sit while he did the unloading cause I was panting and sweating and
so sore. Today I sent him to the car with my son!!! I made it through the
whole store, I unloaded the cart, loaded them in the car, and put away 1/2,
by then I needed a break lol. I am so excited!!! Even my husband is excited,
he knows how much I used to hate grocery shopping. And I am happy to report
that we used to spend between 300-400 on grocery when we would go and today
it was only 124!!! Just meat and veggies and other necessities. I am so
excited!! I just had to share.

Hi, has anyone suffered weeks of being in the hospital dealing with a
leakage? If so, how did you get through it? Did you start eating before you
were completely healed? Help. Melissa

1 YEAR ANNIVERSAY!!!

Saturday, June 26th, 2004

Hi everyone,
Today is my 1 year anniversary of my WLS surgery!!!
I look back on the way my life was and where I am now and I am in awe!!
I can now play easily with my kids. I can run and swim without
embarrassment. I am not looked at in disgust, but in admiration. I can fit
with ease in the theater seat which last year gave me bruises. I can now
ride the rollercoaster, which last year wouldn’t close around me. I can dance
and not only feel good but look good doing it. The leg that I broke last
year, impart due to my weight, now carries me to exercise and lifts weights
and does the stairmachine, The raw insides of my legs, due to the constant
rubbing is gone and I don’t ever have to check the inside seams of my pants
to see if I have worn them out yet.
My health.. well, I’m healthy. My BPI is now 25 from 47, my bp is 105
over 69 and my pules is great. I have lost 116 lbs. my Dr’s. are so pleased,
they tell me I could be their advertisement for their clinic. I can shop in
