I am only two months post-op, but the scale has not moved in about a
month. I was 324 pre-op, and I’m down to about 280 now, but I’m
starting to get frustrated because I haven’t lost anymore in so
long. At first it came off so easily too so i was so excited. I
don’t even think I’ve been losing any inches because my clothes fit
me the same way they did a month ago. I don’t even know what else I
can do at this point. I walk at least 2 miles every day, I go
swimming several times a week, I eat about 600 calories and 40 grams
worth of protein every day, I take my vitamins religiously, and I
drink at least 8 large glasses of water a day. Over the past week,
I’ve been taking protein shakes almost every day and upping my water
intake even more. But the scale still won’t budge. What is going on
here?
Has anyone else experienced a plateau like this so soon after surgery?

Ummm. yeah. It happens. You are two months out and have lost 44 pounds. And
you are frustrated? Good grief. You need to stay off the scale. Seriously.
Get off the damn thing and you won’t notice. Have you been measuring
yourself? That will tell you if you are losing inches. Of course you need to
have a base measurement to compare to but you probably are. You might also
increase your calorie requirements. Your body has probably locked down from
all the exercise you are doing and needs more sustenance so give it more.
Plateaus happen and can happen two weeks or two months out and last for one
week or more than a month. Breathe and quit watching the numbers. How many
of your milestones have you accomplished? Oh and 44 pounds in two months is
NOT slow by any means. Think about it.

Hi Diva,
My first plateau started the moment that I started exercising daily–walking
and swimming. My surgeon’s PA suggested increasing distance, intensity or
cross-training. I also increased my protein and my water. And, viola, the
scale started to move.
My second plateau, I took a hard look at what I was eating and made some
changes, and I dropped 8 lbs. in 1 week or so.
You are very early post-op and from what I’ve read here on OSSG, it’s common
to have a plateau where you’re at. I maybe had one then, but I didn’t weigh
myself for the first 3 months, so I guess what you don’t know, won’t hurt
you. I still avoid the scale. I go by how good I feel and leave it at
that. Someone here said to not weigh if the number will “make or break”
your day.
I don’t panic about plateaus anymore. I have lived to tell the tale. Now,
I figure that my body needs to catch up and I just give it time. It’s funny
that I get compliments on losing weight when I am in a plateau and not when
I am actively losing. I think that’s weird, but there may be something to
the theory of losing inches during a plateau.
Anywho, you are doing fine. Just relax and be gentle with yourself. Your
body may take a little while to figure it all out.

**** Your body sometimes has to take a breather. It can be maddening but it
happens and there is nothing you can do about it. Sometimes upping your water
will help (you should be getting @ 100-120 oz daily. I know thats a lot of
water to a new pouch but sipping slowly and CONSTANTLY helps. I am never
without my water, even in the bathroom. Hey, I’m sitting…

***** The walking is good, the vitamins, good ; water, INCREASE; Protein,
INCREASE; calories;increase. The larger your body mass the more water you need
to flush your body. This may be debatable but think about it. Body mass/cal to
run, Body mass/ waterconsumption, body mass/protein needs. Your body is trying
to save every gram of fat you have. When you cut down to 600 cals a day you are
telling it I’m starving! help me. And help you it does. You need to fool your
body into getting out of starvation mode. Up the protein shakes (I’m talking
the kind that are good for you), Instead of 1 a day raise it to 3. Up your
water at the same time, keep moving and I bet the scales will move. Follow the
rules: Protein, water, vitamins, exercise and this WILL work for you.
**** As an afterthought, how are you doing on carbs? I’m talkng anything that
is not protein?
