1 year status

I received a lot of help before surgery from this group and thought I
would add my 1 year story for those researching this surgery.
I had open RNY distal July 6th 2001. I am a male 44 years old weighed
330 at the time of surgery and was 5′8″. Today I weigh 178 and feel
great. I hike 3 or 4 times a week from 2 miles up to 11 miles. The
only complication I had was a large incisional hernia that was
repaired June 5th and was a cake walk compared to the other surgery.
I have had a blockage 1 time and that was the worst pain I have ever
had. It lasted 2 hours and was rough. Since then I have been more
carefull I am dense but like a dog, pain I understand.
There have been many mental and emotional challenges with this
surgery that I am still learning to deal with. I just returned from a
week at the beach with my family and was proud that I seem to have
finally learned how to order at restaurants and to be satisfied and
not to over eat, I order appetizers. The only foods that I have to

stay away from is Ice Cream and sweets, ice cream was my favorite. I
can eat a few bites but if more than that I am in trouble. Again pain
was my rescue I had been eating a lot of Ice cream and the diareha
caused hemerodes and for now I seem to have learned that lesson. I
researched this completely before surgery and have to say my
experience has been no surprises. It did exactly what they said it
would do and exactly what they said it would not. I did not just rely
on the Doctor for information but used the internet and these groups
a lot. One other thing that was a little different for me than
everyone else was I had nausea for 6 weeks after surgery which made
me very weak and did scare me a bit. The docter said it usually goes
away and mine did the 6th week it disappered. I guess the bottom line
for me speaking at 1 year is that I would do the surgery again. I
hope some of you find this information helpfull as you research this
surgery for yourself and remember this is just one story of many so
do your research. my email is 1gwharris@…. I don’t receive the
post so if you want to contact me use my email thanks.
