Tip for getting in more water

Tuesday, August 31st, 2004

I thought I’d pass along a tip for taking water along with you. When
I was a brand new post-op, I could only drink water comfortably if it
was warm. Now that I’m two months out, I usually prefer to drink it
cold again. I *hate* buying bottled water, plus it gets warm if you
leave it in a parked car. A friend turned me on to a solution:
stainless steel vacuum sports bottles. I got an 18 oz Thermos model
at Target, in the sporting goods/camping section, for about $15. It
keeps water cold for hours, is unbreakable, and slim enough to go into
most car cup holders or throw in a large purse. They’re not cheap,
but if you’re in the habit of buying bottled water they should pay for
themselves quickly. I keep a Brita filter pitcher in my fridge and
fill them from that. I’m slowly turning my husband on to drinking
water instead of soda pop, we take our bottles when we go to outdoor
events.
For longer jaunts I got a couple of larger ones made by Nissan

Questions, Answers and More!

I am a newbie to the club and this is my first post. So I will throw
my two cents out there!
If you’re already eating solid foods one month after your bypass (I
don’t think you specified what procedure you had done) then perhaps
you’re moving too fast and should go back to soft foods. But you did
the right thing in contacting your Doctor and I’m sure they will get
you in the right direction.
I had an open RNY on 8/15/01. I was not considered ‘morbidly obese’,
but due to asthma and osteoarthritis, my insurance approved me. I
was approximately 100 lbs overweight, a size 22 jeans, and now wear a
very comfortable size 10, even an 8 in some things, and have lost
almost 100 lbs, feel absolutely wonderful and have been told I look
great. I still don’t recognize myself sometimes in passing a mirror.
I do things now that I never thought I would, and my surgeon is
pleased, pleased, pleased with my progress. While some say I have

Catching up (and the issue of vomitting)

Monday, August 30th, 2004

I am a little over 2 months out and have lost 44 pounds. I also have to
throw up alot!! I have hesitated to write anything here because it
appeared to be a taboo subject. I also had to throw up alot after my
original surgery many years ago (but only in the beginning months following
surgery, perhaps throughout the first year) and then it seemed I could
finally eat like a normal person. (I recently had a revision due to staple
line disruption). I have read that about 20% of WLS patients do throw up,
maybe more so occassionally rather than with some regularity like myself….I
do fine if I drink the protein shakes, but man cannot live on bread alone! I
sometimes get sick to my stomach even eating soft foods, so who knows…I
guess only the shadow knows…but I am most afraid that it will disrupt my
staple line more than anything. Does anyone else fear that vomitting will
cause a staple line disruption? Or is there any evidence to suggest it? I
can’t describe the feeling other than I feel like I am backing up like a
sewer!! I start to burp, and it just gets worse. There seems to be alot of

Barbara’s Cranky post

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

LOL. I agree with everythng Barbara said in her post save for the “high failure
weight of the agb”. But She is right about the research. Each of us has to be
totally commited to the type of WLS we will be spending the rest of our life
with.
I research for 2 years as well. BMI of 65, paid out of pocket, lurked on lists
etc and I came up with a total different decision then she did. But both were
right.
There is no short cut. You will have to research. Ask your doctor questions and
If you want a specific surgery your insurance does not pay for FIGHT FOR IT!. It
is your body and life and well worth fighting for. Walter Lindstrum at
ObesityLaw .com (He has an RnY) Has helped a lot of individuals fight companys
so that they could get the wls that the knew was correct for them.
I think one thing that both Barbara and I can agree on was that we were both
fighting for our lives when we were doing our research. We listened to both our
heads and our gut feelings when we made our decision. That is how everyone has

Catching up

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

Hiya group!
I’m 2 months out and I’ve lost 50 pounds—which I am THRILLED about! I feel
great, I’m looking so much better and I have tons of energy now! My problem is
that I am having trouble eating. (before anyone says anything—yes I have put a
call in to the doctor :-) I chew my food very well, I eat slow–maybe not slow enough—but many things
when I eat them cause me so much pain and discomfort that I have to throw them
up. Not everything mind you–that is to say I’m not only successfully eating
soft foods or things that go down easily, I’ve eaten steak and chicken and pork
with no problem–so it’s not texture thing. And the things that are bothering
me may go down fine one day and the next cause pain. I did think at first that
it felt like I had to burp—but couldn’t—it was that kind of pressure and
pain. But when I end up spitting things up usually I have to spit everything
out to get any relief. Could it be air bubbles or maybe I am eating too
fast—I take a LONG time to eat and I take small bites. I honestly do not

My VBG story

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

Here is my VBG story. I had VBG 6-97 I started at 364 and lost to 212. I
became pregnant at age 39 with ds#3 1-99 and delivered 10-99 with a 28lb wt
gain. I started to lose after delivery, but started regaining to the point that
I gained back 80+ lbs to 295.
I made myself vomit daily because anytime I tried to eat nutritious food, such
as meats, veggies it got stuck and it was very uncomfortable. Unfortunately I
resorted to grazing on junk food that slid down and icecream was a big down fall
for me.
I had a revision to the RNY 6-29-01 and have gone from 295/196. No more
vomiting or needing to because food got stuck. I can eat anything, only in
smaller quantities. I am so glad to be rid of the vomiting.

answers you may not want to hear

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

hi everyone,
i know i have been asking alot about VBG Vs RNY. i do not think i
have asked anyone to choose a surgery for me. i do believe that i
have posed as to be confused which one to pick and if people could
please help with the confusion or if anyone could share their
successful vbg story with me. i would never put the decision on
which surgery to have in anyone else’s hands but my own and my
surgeons. it is just that i have researched and researched and have
read conflicting articles about the procedures and was looking for
some people to share experiences. that is all. thank you everyone
for your input and your responses. sorry some of us are cranky and
may have taken my post the wrong way!!!!

Exercise: does it get any easier?

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

I was pretty much a slug before surgery eight weeks ago, with a
completely sedentary lifestyle and no exercise. Now I’m trying to get
used to exercising.
Because of a heel problem, I’ve chosen to use a stationary bike for
most of my cardio. I started at something under 10 minutes, and have
worked my way up to 40 minutes and about 10 miles. However, I’ve been
at that stage for 2-3 weeks now, and it still just about kills me!
Shouldn’t it be getting easier now? I’d like to work up to an hour
eventually, but feel like it’s going to take a long time before I’m
ready to add any more time at all. I do it 5-6 days a week, usually
about 8 or 9:00 at night. Not the best time, I know, but it’s what
seems to work best for my schedule. Should I worry that I seem to be
stalled at that stage?
Other things are definitely getting easier, like walking. I’m trying
to start strength training with free weights, though have only done

Questions,Questions,Questions…

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

Hi, I am new to this group. Can someone please help me? I can’t
decide which surgery to do. I have the choice of RNY, VBG, or lap
band. Well, i guess I don’t really have a choice since my insuance
only covers 2 of them, but what do you guys think is the best
surgery? I know RNY is the “gold standard” but I am terrified of
it. I am about 110 overweight. RNY is appealing, because it seems
to have a great sucess rate, but I can’t imagine the intestines being
cut. How bad is the malabsorption, and the hair loss?? I think teh
hairloss scares me the most! VBG seems to have the reputation of
being likely to fail. The lap band is the one that appeals to me the
most, but is the one my insurance won’t cover so I would probably
have to self pay to a doctor in Mexico. I am so worried, I don’t
know what to do. I could settle for the VBG, but I hear conflicting
stories. I have heard it has a similar success rate as the RNY and
then I hear the success rate is very low. One last question, If
