Exercise: does it get any easier?

I was pretty much a slug before surgery eight weeks ago, with a
completely sedentary lifestyle and no exercise. Now I’m trying to get
used to exercising.
Because of a heel problem, I’ve chosen to use a stationary bike for
most of my cardio. I started at something under 10 minutes, and have
worked my way up to 40 minutes and about 10 miles. However, I’ve been
at that stage for 2-3 weeks now, and it still just about kills me!
Shouldn’t it be getting easier now? I’d like to work up to an hour
eventually, but feel like it’s going to take a long time before I’m
ready to add any more time at all. I do it 5-6 days a week, usually
about 8 or 9:00 at night. Not the best time, I know, but it’s what
seems to work best for my schedule. Should I worry that I seem to be
stalled at that stage?
Other things are definitely getting easier, like walking. I’m trying
to start strength training with free weights, though have only done

that a couple of times so far (and not on nights when I do the
cardio).
I’d appreciate any pointers.
Thanks,
Celia
