vbg vs. rny and complications

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

i understand there are complications with any surgery, but i feel
that the vbg has less operative and post-operative complications.
but i am still confused whether to have the rny or the vbg. also, i
just read a huge article on the asbs site under the rationale for
surgery link and most of the complications were for higher bmi’s like
the high 40’s and 50’s. my bmi is like 37. that eased my mind a
little….i guess i need to talk to my surgeon more…anyone out
there have a vbg that they are very happy with…please share!!!!

WHAT DOES THE DOCTOR SAY ABOUT HIM NOT BEING ABLE TO EAT SOLID FOODS????????
I AM 2 AND 1/2 MONTHS OUT AND I EAT ALMOST EVERYTHING EXCEPT SUGARS AND
CARBS AND SOMETIMES I SNEAK A CARB OR TWO. YOU SAY HE IS STILL LOSING
RAPIDLY. HOW MUCH DID HE WEIGH WHEN HE WENT IN AND HOW MUCH DOES HE WEIGH
NOW, YOUR IDEA OF TOO MUCH WEIGHT AND THE DOCTORS’ MAY BE TWO DIFFERENT
IDEAS. AND AS FAR AS EATING IN FRONT OF HIM. I THINK YOU HAVE TO GET OVER
THAT, MY HUBBY WAS THAT WAY WITH ME AND I KEPT INSISTING THAT HE EAT WHAT HE
WANTED. AFTER ALL PEOPLE EATING IN FRONT OF US HAPPENS ALL THE TIME.
RESTURANTS, SOCIAL EVENTS ETC. WELL I HOPE ALL GOES WELL FOR YOU BOTH AND IF
YOU HAVEN’T SPOKE WITH THE DOCTOR MAYBE IT’S TIME YOU DO. GOD SPEED

Surgery On August 12th

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

Hi Everyone,
I can’t believe my date is this coming Monday. I just started to
research the surgery in May and went to the Wish Center in June. I
had my second appt this past week, finished all my pre op testing and
they set the date. My biggest fear was telling my father. I am 50 and
he is 84 but I still feel like a little kid when I have to face him
with a problem. I was sure that he was going to knock the idea and
make me feel bad. Well it did not happen! He was happy for me and he
thought it is a wonderful idea. Wonders will never cease. I think my
dad is the reason I have a weight problem in the first place. But
that is a story for another day. I am starting at 350, going to have
an open RNY and I have not been this hopeful in years. I finally
believe that it will happen this time. So many promises over so many
years, but finally the one thing that will work. I know it will work
for me because I will work for it. This is a team effort with me,

Your Help needed for uninformed pre-op

Friday, August 27th, 2004

Hi all! I have posted before and just wanted to tell you that I called Dr.
Daniel Fabito’s office in St. Louis AGAIN today. We’re going to be in the
STL area in a couple of weeks for a wedding so I wanted to stop at the
hospital and have a look around. I was asking his coordinator about what all
I needed to do before surgery, etc. I’ve kind of felt like I’m floundering
here a bit because I didn’t seem to be getting any answers! Well, as it
turns out, I found out from Ida (the coordinator) today that Dr. Fabito does
group consults/seminars every Monday at 4:30. We were planning on coming
home on Sunday, but since we’re going to be there already (we live about 6-7
hours from STL) I went ahead and booked us for the consult/seminar. I guess
that will really get the ball rolling. I want to have surgery in the
December timeframe. I did ask how many procedures the Dr. has performed,
etc. Ida told me he’s performed over 1800 surgeries and I just HAD TO ask
the next question…..he’s had 8 deaths. WOW! 8!!! That was really a
shocker…I was all ready for ZERO, but considering the number of surgeries

Hospital - self sabotage

Friday, August 27th, 2004

Hi, it is me again. I should also say that I spent about 3 or 4 weeks in the
hospital on IV fluids because I had a leakage. Melissa

Can someone tell me what is the failure rate with the RNY surgery? Thanks

Self sabatoge

Friday, August 27th, 2004

HI, I am wondering if anyone would like to answer a few questions for me. I
told my surgeon that I did not feel that I was losing weight fast enough and
he said that I was self sabotaging or wanting to stay fat. I have lost 26
lbs in 9 and half weeks. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? At first I
was stunned and didn’t know what to think. Later I started to wonder if my
childhood was to blame for my wanting to stay fat (or so he thinks). Then I
started to get angry and thought that maybe he was using this as a cop out
because the RNY surgery just doesn’t work for some. If someone has websites
on self sabotaging, please let me know. I am unsure as to how to handle
this. I thought about getting a different doctor but am not sure if that is
what I should do. I became very upset when I left the office and am wanting
to know how I should handle this situation. Melissa

JIB to RNY?Anybody with Kaiser?(Xpost,Long)

Friday, August 27th, 2004

I have the 26 year old jejunoileal bypass that was popular in the
70’s, and must be reversed/revised due to the oxalate kidney stones
damaging my kidney! I changed our drywall business over to Kaiser,
because they will at least hook my 14″ intestine back up, to deal
with my malabsorption problems. When I met with the surgeon on
Tuesday, he said I definitely needed a revision, because I would gain
back my 125lb weight loss. I was totally surprised that he would
offer me any other WLS. It seems that he wants me to go through their
program for MO since I never had to do any life style changes with
the JIB, and if I don’t have the RNY I will gain my weight back. MO
people are not normal people that just eat too much, it is how their
body absorbs and uses the food they eat, plus they eat more because
of the feeling of hunger from the food flow. I am a fan of the
duodenal switch, but I am not convinced that I would get rid of the
kidney stones. I feel that having to watch my diet for diabetes, and

Lil Update

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

Hi folks,
I have been in lurker mode lately, but wanted to give
you an update. Last time I posted was with the news
that I finally had a date. Took me 4 years to get it,
but I did!!!
Well, that date is 9 days away. Monday, August 12 I go
in for a final pre-op appointment and testing. Tuesday
afternoon I go in to have an epidermal catheter put in,
Wednesday Morning (Aug 14) I go in for an Open RNY.
This has been a very long journey for me. It started
off researching the proceedure with my best friend. He
was able to have the surery before I could. He also
died 6 days out of the hospital from a blood clot, and
paramedic disdain for a fat man.
Even with the death of my best friend, I still believe
