VBG OR RNY?

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

hey everyone,
i thought i knew i wanted the vbg, then i was reading about how
people fail miserably with this surgery. and that alot of times you
can’t eat qauality food but you could sweets, sugar, sodas, etc. i
wanted the vbg because i am what they consider a “lightweight”. i
weigh almost 240. i am confused now becasue i did not want the RNY
becasue of the long term complications with malnutrition and the
dumping and i didn’t want to knock out sugar completely from my
life. i thought i would have the vbg because after getting to my
goal weight i would like to have a treat here and there in moderation
and be able to eat a little more normally.
then i read that people with the rny do eat sweets sometimes and are
ok. i am soooo confused now on which procedure to have. any advice
for me….or is there anyone out there who had the vbg with some long-
term sussess and care to share your story with me? thanks guys

European Diet vs American Diet

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

According to the World Heath Organization there is less then 1% difference in
the diets of Americans and Europeans as of 1996. That 1% difference resides in
the amount of wine that is drunk and at what age wine consumption begins.
It the Lap-Band works for Europeans, as it does, it will work for Americans too.
The choice of a WLS is a personal choice and should be based on YOU and what you
can cope with not out dated stats and 3rd person anecdotes. Everyone must
research and compare all the fact to what they know they can live with.
The Lap-Band is a powerful tool in the battle against obesity and should not be
dismissed without due consideration.

new post-op

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

Hi all,
I am home, recovering and doing very well. I’m going to tell about my
surgery journey, because I enjoyed reading them so much when I was pre-
op. Here goes:
I had a surgery time of 4:30pm and was instructed to report to surgery
at 1:30pm. I had a terrible migraine all day and I do think a morning
appt. would be the way to go. Any way I was not called in for pre-op
until 4:00pm. They would not let my husband (John) in with me and said
it was against their policy. Once inside, I pressed the issue and they
went and got him. They got me all hooked up and I saw my doctor scoot
by once, but he didn’t glance my way. We waited and talked and I began
to cry. The pre-op nurse was very kind and compassionate, but I
couldn’t have done it without John. I also had pictures of my kids and
I kept looking at them. I prayed and said alot of affirmations about
healing.

Open vs. Lap RNY …Fobi?

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

I am debating whether it is worth the pain and longer recovery time
to have an open RNY vs. lap RNY. The surgeon I picked only does open
procedures because he does a FOBI pouch with a silastic ring, and I
guess you can’t put the ring in unless you do it open. The ring is
suppossed to keep the outlet of the stomach from stretching and
allow for longer period of rapid weight loss and less regaining in
the future. My surgeon’s partners do the FOBI pouch without the
ring using a lap procedure. I am wondering, since I only have one
shot at this surgery, should I go with the open procedure with the
ring or the lap without the ring.

Can’t decide which surgery…

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

Hi, I am new and pre-op. I am interested in the AGB(lap band) or the
VBG(vertical banded gastroplasty). I am sure that most people on
this list have had RNY. Is there anyone that has had VBG that is
willing to email me and tell me of their experience (good or bad.)
I would really appreciate it and it would help me to make the biggest
decision of my life.
Thanks.

HUSBAND POST OP 17 MONTHS

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

My husband has posted many messages on this board, but I want to ask
A question from a wife’s point of view.
My husband had his bypass done 17 months ago, and it’s been pure hell
for me to watch him basically starve to death. At this point, he
still can’t eat any kind of meat. His main diet consists of mashed
potatoes, eggs, and certain types of fish only. If what he eats
isn’t pureed, he can’t eat it. My question at this point, is this
normal at this stage of post op or is it just more bad luck. My
husband and I have not eaten the same meal since his surgery. So it’s
very hard for me to eat certain foods in front him, even though he
says it doesn’t bother him, I feel so guilty for wanting a steak, a
piece of fruit, or a piece of bread knowing that he can’t eat any of
these type of foods anymore. Also he is still losing weight at a
rapid rate. I just need to know if this the norm. Also I would like
to hear from of the spouses about their feeling, especially from

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

have lost 161 lbs. The RNY was a complete life saver for me. I to am not
here to argue the different types of WLS, my suggestion is to research,
research, research and find what you feel is right for you!!!!! I’m just
thrilled with my results i’ve had know problems and i feel like a true
Diva!!!!!! I thank God everyday for allowing me to have WLS. Good look in
your research!!!!!

New Member protein vs calories

Wednesday, August 25th, 2004

I joined this group hoping to find information and maybe be lucky
enough to find others that believe eating correct foods is more
important than finding a good protein shake. Anyone else doing
extensive research of calories vs protein foods?

everything!!!!

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

hey guys, i have been lurking on some other message boards here and
some people are sooo against these surgeries….they remain
supportive of your decision but would rather see you not do it…they
give advice such as: just eat less and move more….try everything
else before you have the surgery….well i feel i have…i do not
need to write a list…but imagine 8 years of constant yo-yo
dieting. that is alot of stuff to try. i also feel emotionally i
need the surgery and that the decision to have the surgery is an
individual one. each person has their own reasons for wanting to
have the surgery and i think that alot of people who think of the
surgery as unneccessary are very uneducated or just do not
understand…and how could they, they are not me!!!! alot of the
posts are from people who had reversals, but had the reversals in the
80’s and had the surgery in the 70’s. i mean the surgery still has
its risks but it has come a long way….they state that the surgery
