Why even have an RNY?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

Hi, to everyone :) I haven’t had my surgery yet, but it’s scheduled for the day after Labor
Day. I’m looking forward to it. I just read, though that the RN-Y “becomes
diluted after awhile and the body compensates”. Is this all for naught,
then?

Inches vs. pounds

Tuesday, August 24th, 2004

I just have to say that Denise is right about checking
your size. I weigh, and have been on a plateau for
months (although I’m only 11 months out!), but after
stopping the weight loss, I’ve lost from a size 22 to
an 18. My weight has been within five pounds for at
least 3 months, possibly longer. When it goes up, I
worry, but it seems like, on my “fat” days - days I
feel like I will be at the higher end on the scale,
I’m almost always on the lower end. Doesn’t make
sense, but it’s true! So, if you must weigh, do, but
also pay close attention to your inches.

Denise..you are always telling people not to be so tough on themselves.
Listen to you. You established all the bad eating habits for many, many
years and even though you have been OK for 4 years it does not erase a
lifetime of crap. You say you know how to do all of this and you have been
giving advise since I have been involved. Well here it is….just stop. You
can’t tell me that your grazing will continue as it is now if you get rid of
all the junk. You will not be running to the store all day. Wake up
tommorrow and start doing the exercise, water and protein. You know you can
do it. You and I will probably have to fight this battle forever so you are
lucky to have had the last 4 years with minimum problems. You have worked
too hard and gone through too much to let it get out of control. Do it for
your daughter..my kids are 11 and 13 and unfortunately they have already
picked up my poor eating habits. They are under control but i worry more
than I can tell you, they both enjoy food too much. Your daughter is young
and you have the ability to make food a non issue. Let her learn to eat to

Denise, take it easy on yourself

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

Denise,
Wow! You are being pretty cruel to yourself. Stop it please. I wouldnt let
you talk to me that way. I would like to stop you from talking to/ about
yourself that way. Recovery from disordered eating and other compulsive
behaviors is always two steps forward, one step back. ALWAYS! We should worry
about those who seem to breeze through because they arent learning to cope with
adversity while they recover. You are right that you know what to do. You are
right that the problem lies in not doing those things. (easier said than
done…..for ALL of us!)
Take a breath. Take several. Try to be loving to yourself. Try to treat
yourself the way you would treat your daughter if she were in the exact same
position as you. You would never put her down or focus on her weaknesses.
Focus on the STRENGTHS! You have many. You have a long history of success with
your tool. You have had far more success than failure. Please stop thinking
in terms of “all or nothing”.

Center of our lives

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

Denise: I understand what you are saying. Remember.
It is not the food per se. But the fact that being fat has been the center of
our existance for most of our lives. Being fat, of taking the weight off it
make really not difference it still has been the center of our lives. I think
it is key to move on. To find a new center. I think that is the hardest of all
things to do.
What I have seen is the people who have found other things, another center seem
to keep it off and move on in their lives.
I have lost over 100+ twice before in my life and gained it back. This time as I
lose I am trying to build other parts of my life so that when the physical
weight is gone there won’t be such a hole. And regardless of which wls we have
had we all know how to fill that hole. We a clever enough to find a way.
That is not to say you should give up the list etc. But you should be building
up other interests in your life. They feed us in the ways that we are really
hungry.

Jonny come lately to the Lap-Band

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

Wittgrove Clark and Elmer are Jonny com lately to the wls area when compared to
Weiner, Kuzmak and Farvoritti…..but then they are Europeans and have done 3x
the number of surgeries that Wittgrov Clark and Elmer have. And they all
prefer the Lap- Band. Draw your own conclusions…….

Swallowing pills

Monday, August 23rd, 2004

Sorry for the cross posting, but I had to share! I have FOUND a
solution to swallowing pills, no matter what size they are. I just put
a small amount of yogurt (or pudding, etc) on a spoon, put the pill
inside and swallow. At first I was only doing this to my smaller pills,
thinking it would never work with my calcium horse pills, BUT IT DOES!!!
I am delighted!!! I HATE swallowing pills, even tiny pills are hard for
me to get down, but not anymore!
I was talking to a friend mine who is in the medical profession. He
told me that when you swallow pills using liquids, the muscles in your
throat react different than when you swallow food. Food swallowing is a
more natural function for your throat.
I have to say that my dread of swallowing pills has resulted in me
skipping the necessary pills I must take. NOT ANYMORE, and to give you
an idea of how big my calcium pills are, someone mentioned cutting them
with a pill cutter,,,,,when I tried that I couldn’t even get the pill

Denise’s struggles

Sunday, August 22nd, 2004

Dear Denise,
I will post this to the whole group, as I think many are hanging on what you
posted, wondering if they will face similar struggles down the road. Almost
everyone will, to some degree. That’s the way it is. The initial effects of
RNY become diluted over time, as the body adjusts to the changes and
compensates.
That being said (something you already know), let me respond to your deeply
felt despair over what you are going through. You have always been there for
everyone, researching, seeking legislative changes to aid people in their
insurance quests, and so on. Whether or not any of us have “THE ANSWER” for
you, we are here for you nonetheless.
I don’t know of any magic supplements or such, but I always try to remember a
simple addage: if what you’re doing isn’t working, try something else. When
my brain is swirling around, trying to find some sense in a situation that is
too complex, it helps to look for the most simple answer, sometimes–that is,

Why do we fight

Sunday, August 22nd, 2004

Dearest Dennise
Don’t worry, no flaming here. This is a support group. If you can’t
come here and tell us your troubles, where can you go?
I understand your fear of gaining, and I think most of us do.
Think of that beautiful little girl of yours and remember how you
felt before you lost the weight. You can do things with her that you
could never have done then. Thats why we fight so hard!!! That is
why it matters so much.
I know I am nowhere near where you are being only 11 weeks out, but I
know the fear of losing it all and then gaining it back again. I
think everyone on this list has done that before.
Just that you are asking for help is a good step forward.
You have just had a slip. It is not permanent. I am going to
suggest that you find an eating disorders councelor, if you can. You
know what you need to do, but sometimes it helps to talk to a live
