Do not buy one, I would suggest renting one instead as you will only be using
this for maximum 2wks if that.
I swore by the recliner I rented from a medical supply company that made it alot
easier on the pressure of pain from my stomach and the ability to sleep well.

One thing thats critical here, get the kind with a push button, especially if
your legs are heavy. My legs were so heavy I didnt have the strength to lift
them with the handle type I had and pulling on the incision was hell. I rented
a hospital bed for a couple of weeks and it worked much better for me.

I remember that about 5 days before my surgery (about 15 months ago), I
absolutely panicked over the need to get a recliner. I received some good
advice from this group: it may be useful, it may not, but it is not a
necessity. Another bit of advice I received was to rent one, which is what I
did--I went down the block to a furniture rental place and rented a big old
recliner. I did find it useful for the first week or so, when lying down to
sleep was a little uncomfortable (without drugs). But I wouldn't say it was
a necessity. I woudn't have postponed the surgery due to lack of a recliner
at home... <g

I looked into getting a recliner before my open RNY, but it didn't
work out. We do have a comfortable armchair with matching ottoman,
and I ended up sleeping in that for about 3 weeks. It hurt to sleep
in bed before then. But everyone's different, and some have no
problem sleeping in bed. You can always try propping up lots of
pillows, though I personally didn't have much luck with that, I
couldn't get comfortable.

My advice would be no. I did have a hard time changing positions
from lying to sitting at first, but I didn't notice that sitting in
the recliner helped at all. In fact, since mine rocks, when I went
to get up, it would rock forward and somehow that made it seem harder
for me. I preferred the higher chairs in the house.
But then everyone's different and I had a lap RNY, not an open. I
had no problem sleeping lying down. My only problem was lying down
to begin with and getting back up again once I was lying down! But
after the first few days back home, that got MUCH easier.
