It doesn’t help with weight loss, but it does help with long term success of
not regaining weight because of the greater malabsorbtion.

Proximal and distal refer to the amount of intestine bypassed during
RNY surgery. Distal is a greater amount bypassed and proximal a
smaller amount. The size of the pouch and the amount of intestine
bypassed help determine the weight lost and the amount of
    malabsorption that occurs.
I had 120 cm bypassed which is between a proximal and distal length.
My surgeon doesn’t ask people what they want or tell them what he is
going to do. He decides which is best for the patient.
