Everwood

Monday, February 28th, 2005

Jo,
I watch the show. I too was pretty surprised. It does seem that I am
hearing about it everywhere! I figure the media is going to do it’s usual
job of inundating us with information. I think this is to our benefit.

TV Show “EVERWOOD”

Monday, February 28th, 2005

I saw the show. As an aside, Everwood is one of the best new TV shows going
right now. It really is an excellent show. Other good ones: John Doe and
MDs. MDs is what I would have liked ER to be but never was. Just a non-WLS
opinion . . . . .
I also watched Dateline about Al Roker and I have to sasy I am far less
concerned now. I just didn’t see how it could be remotely possible to be in
relatively little pain after surgery. Then I saw how they do Lap RnY and
figured it out. If I wasn’t excited before, boy am I now! I really think
I’ll do well! And being positive - isn’t that half the battle?
We’ll see…..6 weeks (or 43 days or 1026 hours) to go ’til my surgery . . .

NERVOUS PREOP

I AM HAVING SURGERY IN FOUR WEEKS. I AM EXCITED AS WELL AS
TERRIFIED. I COULD USE SOME SUPPORT…DUH, THATS WHY I AM IN A
SUPPORT GROUP..LOL ANY TIPS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Dateline (Long)

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

I was really impressed with Al Roker on the Dateline show last night. My
17 year old son watched with me (after almost pitching a fit because he
couldn’t watch a movie he wanted to see) and he was really impressed
also.
I thought the video diary was an excellent idea. Although I was appalled
that anyone would put a popular public image ahead of someone’s health
and life (as Al’s agent did), I could see that for a celebrity, this was
a real issue of concern. I was also taken aback by his own Mother’s fear
that he would have a drastic personality change if he had the
surgery—it really brought home the need for some heavy-duty education
to the general public.
I enjoyed everything about the show, and even though I have always been
an Al Roker fan, I am completely in love with him now, because he really
told the truth about what it is like to be morbidly obese in this world.
I also have a tendency to use self-deprecating humor to get through

The Roker interview

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

I to watched the dateline show last night. I had my hubby watch it
to he sat litterally riveted to the TV. He said “wow I didn’t
realize how complicated it really is”. He now has a better
understanding of what I go through on a daily basis. He knew about
the pain and health issues. I don’t think he realized how much it
bothered me emotionally to be obese. I have always been a confident
person. I told people I didn’t care what people thought of how I
looked. When inside I would wonder what was running through their
minds. The way I carry my wieght I look pregnant and have had people
ask when are you due? The look on their face when you say I’m not
pregnant. They are a little ashamed then its one of pity. Well dont
cry for me Agrentina. I am taking control and look out world because
here I come.
I think that Al Roker has done a wonderful thing in letting the
world know what it is like to choose this path. He did it with grace

Exercise timing questions

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

I’m trying to figure out the timing of my exercise sessions in
relation to meals. Up to now I’ve been doing evening exercise, 1-3
hours after dinner, but am starting to experiment with splitting it
up between morning and evening. Is it best to eat breakfast before
or after working out? Since you’re not supposed to drink for an hour
after eating, that makes it tough to exercise right after breakfast,
since I need to drink while I do bike or treadmill. Which timing
would be better for the metabolism? I don’t have trouble sleeping
after evening exercise, so that’s not an issue. And would I burn
fewer calories or get less conditioning if I do two 30-minute
sessions rather than one 50-minute session?

P.S. I’m 5 months out from surgery and my weight just went below 200
for the first time in at least 16 yars. Woo-hoo!

Vicious Bitter Victims

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

A response to volumes of hate mail and angry posts that began with a
discussion of something that occured on Oprah and was gradually
expanded upon through the posts of the lovely warm-hearted people who
frequent this board:
Ok… we have established that I am of the opinion that WLS is the
EASY way out in comparison to making and sticking with the lifestyle
changes necessary for a drastic, long lasting weightloss. AND we
have established that obesity is a CONDITION people perpetuate on
their own and not a disease that they are sticken with and have no
control over. That’s what I believe. I realize that there are a lot
of you who do not share my perspective which is fine, but I have to
say that I’m quite disappointed in this “SUPPORT” group. Rather than
recognizing and acknowledging different perspectives, a lot of you
feel compelled to viciously defend the position you take…The
position where you were not the least bit responsible for your own

Opinions, please

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

I have been to two different doctors for consults for RNY. The first
said that they bypass 150cm standard on everyone. The second doctor
said they bypass 75cm on everyone, as bypassing more does not
significantly increase weight loss and can increase chance of
nutritional deficiencies. Ok, I don’t want nutritional deficiencies,
but if I am going to have this surgery, I want to be able to lose and
especially maintain the loss.
Thanks,
Kim
