WTG AL!

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

i watched the Dateline story last night, and i NEVER watch
television…LOL…anyway, i thought Al did a wonderful job with his
video journal, and the interview. and yes, i cried and i laughed,
right along with him, because i -understood- what he was saying, and
i think the show presented what was happening in a way that even
people who have not had a weight problem will -understand- what was
going on.
i was glad the surgeon talked about criteria for the surgery, the
risks, and the fact that it is NOT an “easy out”…
i recieved in email several shocked notes from friends about the “1
in 200 die in this surgery” and they all are flipped out, but look i
say, i am here, everything went fine….dont flip out NOW LOL….
research, learn and learn some more is still my advice to anyone
considering this, and dont let anyone make your choice for you. : )
hope you are all having a great day!!!

oprah vs. roker

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

ok I have to clarify the oprah thing, I had alot to say the other day
about oprah and her show, but I want to be clear- she has the right
to do the show she did, which apparently was not to be about wls, my
gripe is how she treated her guest, she acted like she was born to be
thin, she “seemed” to look down on her guest, and i felt she was very
rude! but anyway that was last week
Al Roker I think did a terrific job, documenting his journey,
speaking of his life long battle, the effect it had/has on his loved
ones. his desire to keep it private,I am so glad he isn’t keeping
quiet anymore because he passed on alot of information, and he looks
terrific and the happiness just beams from his face, he looked like
he was going to cry when the man in the suit store told him the size
of the suit he was wearing. it was very encouraging yet not covered
in fluff.
I hope everyone got to see it!

rokers’ story

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

i just watched the dateline special and hope that many of you saw it too. it was
by all accounts the best program i have seen. it was very balanced and positive
and like al i didn’t get to have my dad see the results, he died a month before
my surgery. i guess that the similiarities really got to me. although i was
sicker than al, older too, i felt very much the same. i liked that he was so
upfront and believe that he waited to acknowledge the surgery to see if it would
really work for him. i loved the fact that like me he is so enjoying his new
life and that he talked about the reality gap of what you look like and what you
yourself see. he said he’d catch up and like all of us he will in time. yeah
al!!!! he is a much more intelligent and articulate spokesperson for the surgery
than carnie. he is also a good role model in that he is careful not to push the
surgery in a way that makes it seem a quick fix for everyone because it is not
the right thing for everyone.never once was it called the easy way out and this
fact was nicely spoken by his surgeon.
kudos for nbc as well for doing a real story without a spin.

Life

Saturday, February 26th, 2005

Nov. 5th had a cowork go in for lap. She had some blood problems
plus blood sugar. They got it under control then sent her home. 3
days later she fill in the bathroom. Husband and son could not get
her up. They call 911, by the time they got there she was gone.
Very sad, it opened up my problems all over again. Its turf knonwing
that I almost lost the battle.
Just wanted to say that, when looking to change the way we are built
look at all that could happen.
Please say a pray for Jessica.

Help - I have fallen off the wagon!!!!!

Friday, February 25th, 2005

Hi all
I am almost 4 months out and feel as if I have fallen off the wagon -
my stress level has been so high lately due to issues with my kids -
too long of a story to go into but one is sick, one is in the
hospital and the last is on its way to being sick too -
So with all this halloween candy so ready available - I am stealing
some - I usually dont even eat candy -and to a certain extent I wish
I would dump - because then I wouldn t rush to the chocolate -
I feel as if I have gained weight but have not weighed my self - I
plan on dumping the rest of the candy tonight - my kids are not
eating it - so its there for me to dip into - I hate this -
I need some advice on what to do to deal with this stress - I am
seeing my therapist tommorrow - she is very good - and specializes in
eating disorders….
anyway any help would be appreciated

Carbs vs. Fats: Article refuting “Big Fat Lie”

Friday, February 25th, 2005

I remember one of the diets I was on a few years ago. I was on a verrry
low fat diet, under 15 grams of fat per day (my gallbladder went bad
because of it) And the carbs I never watched believe me lol And in about
I’d say a lil over a year I lost over 150 lbs. I lived on pasta and
other high carb things. But of course I went back to eating fatty stuff
and gained it all back plus alot more!!

EVERWOOD SHOW

Friday, February 25th, 2005

DOES ANYBODY EVER WATCH THE MONDAY NIGHT SHOW CALLED EVERWOOD?
I TELL YA THEY ARE TALKING MORE & MORE ABOUT WLS ON EVERYTHING. THE
DOC ON THE SHOW WAS TRYING TO CONVINCE A PATIENT TO HAVE A GASTRIC
BYPASS BUT OF COARSE INSURANCE WOULD NOT COVER (GO FIGURE THE STORY
OF MY LIFE) SO LO AND BEHOLD HE HAD A SURGEN FRIEND THAT WAS GOING TO
DO IT FOR FREE. I WISH THAT WAS A REAL LIFE SHOW AND IT WERE ME. ONE
CAN ONLY DREAM.
JUST THOUGHT I WOULD MENTION THE FACT THAT I AM HEARING MORE ABOUT
WLS SINCE I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET IT.

removing the stigma

Friday, February 25th, 2005

It is my desire to educate people about obesity, and more importantly
let more of the 15 million Americans who suffer from it, know there
is a cure. That involves not only removing the stigma of obesity but
also the stigma of weight loss surgery as being some easy way out.
It is nothing more than a medical fix for a medical problem, no
different than someone with blocked arteries from years of smoking
going in a hospital and getting angioplasty so they won’t drop dead
one day. It gives them a new chance at life, and no one ever
criticizes them for taking the easy way out. Yet when the obese seek
a medical cure, the same people who bothered them about their weight,
also down them for taking advantage of the best treatment. We all
must do our part to not only educate the obese but also the thin who
have no idea what our quality of life is like. Anyone who has had
surgery and speaks out openly and proud I think advances the cause
furhter.
