A couple more questions…
1 - What was your preop prep? i.e. NPO,enema’s, etc…
2 - Were you able to suck on ice chips after your
surger?
3 - How many drainage tubes are common?
4 - How long is the NG tube in?
Thanks Again for the advice.
Regards -

1. My pre-op was was 24 hours of liquids, including a solution that I drank
to “clean me out.”
2. I had ice chips as soon as I woke up and for the next 24 hours, until my
x-rays to check for leaks.
3. I had no drainage tubes.
4. All tubes were removed before I woke up.

preop was to drink that nasty stuff that cleaned me out, nothing to eat after 6
pm and nothing to drink after midnight—I only had soup that day anyway
yes, I got ice chips and man they were the best things there!
I had 4 drainage tubes–they came out the day I left the hospital
I didn’t have an NG tube

I haven’t had surgery yet - but I did ask my doctor about an NG tube,
and she said they don’t leave them in after surgery. And she do leave a
tissue drain in to drain the fluid from the fascia, for a couple of
days.

I had no special pre-op prep, no bowel preps, etc. I had to visit
the hospital a week before surgery, have chest xrays, talk to the
anesthesiologist, answer some questions, and I think, give some blood.
But different surgeons require different things.
I wasn’t given ice chips. Instead I had lemon glycerine moistened q-
tips, or gauze soaked in water
Is that the breathing tube? It was put in after I was unconcious and
removed before I was conscious again. Thank God.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: The NG tube is a naso-gastric tube and is used to drain away
acids and other fluids from the new baby stomach. Not every surgeon uses them,
and those that do, leave them in different lengths of time.
