surgery 11/18

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005

I had surgery on Mon. and came home yesterday.
Everything went very well. I had both an open RNY and
hernia surgery. The first 2 days were rough, and I am
still very sore, but I know that will get better. I
had a wonderful roommate named Kathy, whose positive
attitude kept me motivated. I heartily recommend that
everyone have another bariatric roommate so you can
encourage each other and have someone to walk with. I
also had my husband at the hospital for most of the
day. He was a wonderful help for me and my roommate,
when the nurses got too busy. I was glad to get home
yesterday. I actually got some sleep last night :) Thanks for all the e-mail and prayers from everyone.
I’ll write more another time, now it is time to get
off the computer and go rest.

Bad taste in mouth

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005

Hello Everyone,
I had laproscopic RNY on Nov. 5th. I am having trouble drinking
protein shakes and am having better luck with cottage cheese (though
that is all I eat to get the protein in).
I get a horrible taste in my mouth and it seems that I am constantly
brushing my teeth. Has anyone else experianced this? Does it go
away?
Thanks,
Adele

Surgery on Tues

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

Hi,
I am scheduled to have my surgery on Tuesday, November 26,2002. It has been a
long wait and I am very positive about the surgery. I just wanted to come into
the group and let you know I will be corresponding as I am recooping.
I am hoping to go back to work in 2 weeks as that is all the time I have. If I
have to I can go out on disability, but do not want to. I have had different
feedback from people as to when they returned to work.
I would appreciate any feedback anyone can give me.
Thanks

stomach size 6mos-1 yr

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

i am 10 months out and occasionally i have a few bites and i am done. having
said that, for the most part i can eat way more than i thought i ever would and
am so lucky to have never thrown up. i can eat a lot of rare to med rare cooked
chicken, fish, beef, lamb, and game. if it is medium or more done no way does it
go down. i can eat all veggies and fruits. i don’t drink juice unless it is v-8
but use a little cranberry juice in water to flavor it. i drink decaff coffee
and teas use cream in my coffee because skim milk bothers me can eat cheeses
fine etc… basically i can eat anything except for skimmilk products. what i
can’t do, and i am grateful is over eat and by that i mean i now eat like most
thin people do. i enjoy the heck out of my food but get full relatively fast
before i can do much damage, lol. it is wonderful. you feel very satisfied and
you will learn when to stop through trial and error. usually from what i have
gathered from other posts is that the further out you get the more you can eat,
but you never can eat the amounts you did before.
this is not brain surgery so use the first 6 months to retrain yourself into

Stoma size question…..

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

Hi Everyone!
Got a question for ya…does the size 1.4cm sound right for the RNY stoma? I
went for a presentation today and that is what I wrote down. Everything moved so
fast that I am not sure that I wrote it right or not. It may have been 1.4mm.
Could either one of those sound like they could be the size of a stoma and if
so, is it a good size?
That was on my list of IMPORTANT questions and leave it to me to flub it up.
None of the surgeons in my area do a pouch size smaller than 30cc so that is
what I am getting. My bypass length will be 100cm. I guess that will make me a
proximal girl. I have a total of 122 pounds to loose to bring me to goal. I
can’t wait to get my date. I know it is the first part of January but not the
specific day.
If anyone else has a 30cc pouch with 100cm bypass. I would love to hear of your
success. I was really searching to find a surgeon that would do a smaller pouch
but no luck! Maybe it is for the best…30cc is only 2 tablespoons, far cry

getting enough fluids

Monday, March 21st, 2005

I had the same problem. I put an alarm clock on my desk to go off at certain
times of the day…i.e. 20 mins after I got there…20 mins before lunch. Then
when it went off, I’d drink an ounce or 2. and instead of turning the alarm
off, i hit snooze…viola a reminder to drink every 15 mins without setting a
bunch of timers. until you get used to it or can drink enough at 1 sitting to
satiate you for longer periods of time. You’ll definately feel better. Not to
scare you or anything, but not drinking enough had me going back to the
emergency room for a saline iv and so dizzy i felt like a giant had picked me up
and swung me by my ankles slamming my head into a wall……..in other words
DRINK SOMETHING! And another thing I’d drink pedialyte some days It was better
absorbed in me when I’d gotten that dehydrated. Good luck.

weird?

Monday, March 21st, 2005

I had a wierd thing happen this week and while I’m not “upset” over it, I’m
wondering what’s going on. I usually weigh myself once a day. Tuesday after
work I hopped on the scale and it said 181, which I had been at for a couple of
days. Wednesday morning I hopped on and it said 173. Now, I thought maybe it
was the scale and had all the kids weigh themselves and they were all their
normal weight. So, I just chalked it up to a fluke and didn’t worry about it.
Today I hopped on and it’s 170, so I guess the 173 was correct. Is it possible
to lose 8 pounds while you are sleeping? If my scale is right that’s what
happened Monday night.
Oh, and just to assure the people who are against scales—I’m not “obessed”
with the scale, I just like to see where I am. I don’t freak when the scale
stops moving or anything (which happens every 4 or 5 weeks for about 2
weeks)—I know and understand that sometimes the weight loss stops but the body
still loses inches. I just like to have a point of reference—that’s all:-)

Binge eating

Monday, March 21st, 2005

Hi all,
I need some info and hope that all of you may be able to help me.
I am a binge eater. I have it bad and now that I have decided to have
the surgery it seems to be getting worse. I know it sounds crazy but
I never knew it was classified as an eating disorder. Sometimes I
eat so much that I am in physical pain. My question is, does the RNY
help with this kind of disorder? I am afraid that I will have the
surgery and not lose as much as I want or will gain the weight back.
I know that initially I won’t be able to overeat because I will vomit
but what about after the honeymoon is over and you are
eating “normally”. If there is anyone out there that was a binge
eater before surgery could you please let me know what I can expect.
Thank you for any information that you can provide.

Good scale

Any suggestions for a good bathroom scale? I’m even considering a
balance beam scale like in the md’s. Anyone got an accurate and
reliable one?
thanks,
Susan

insurance denial Re: OK, here’s what happened to me

Who/where did you call to set this up in advance? Will the program I am going
through know about this? That sounds so much more reasonable that the price I
am thinking I am going to have to pay!!! I called again and the woman I need
to talk to about self pay is out of the office until Monday… should’ve
known LOL.
Unfortunately refinancing/taking a second on my house is not an option for us
:O( I know that my 70 yr old grandmother has a little money tucked away, but
I really am hoping the website my sister put together will come through for
us (she made one asking for donations LOL). I have been tearing through my
house today trying to find stuff to sell on ebay as well. My sister is so
sweet……. she has pledged to work 16 hours OT a week at work for this as
well. I am sure hoping she won’t have to do that for too long though!!!
Thanks everyone for your advice!!! I am keeping all the emails in case I need
them!
