prior Hepatitis B & WLS

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

I had Hep B about 12 years ago and my blood tests have always been
normal since then. I had a hell of a time with the Hepatitis, but
I’m completely recovered now. I have the antibody in my blood, as I
always will since the exposure. My question is this; Can someone
who has had Hepatitis B (not A or C) have this WLS? I’ve just begun
my journey to a better life and haven’t consulted my PCP or Ins yet.
I just made the decision 10 days ago, and have only done the
informational seminar so far. I thought I’d ask the pros and see if
anyone has any information on this before I REALLY have high hopes…
Anyone had WLS with a previous case of Hep B? Please email me
direct or CC me with your reply.
TIA,
Sally

Laura’s post regarding being sick

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

I would like to encourage Laura to please talk to her doctor about
this, and stop comparing yourself to other people. One of the
problems with this list is that there is such diversity among us
(which is not a bad thing), and most of our experiences are unique to
us. We don’t know all the specifics regarding the actual procedure
that was performed on you. Even if we did have the exact same
procedure, with the same doctor, our experience can certainly be
different because our bodies are not stamped from machines, they are
each unique creations. I have been through this surgery along with 2
revisions (this is another story), but each time my experience was
very different from the other times.
The last time I had it, I could tolerate ****NO**** bread of ANY
kind. I could tolerate no crackers and no meat. For over a year I
could not get much of anything down except some unsweetened liquids.
I dearly loved pasta. Could not tolerate it. When I found a food

eating problems/long

Friday, April 29th, 2005

when i was newly post-op i worried too that i wasn’t able to eat much and that i
wouldn’t get my protein in because i hated the shakes and they made me sick
because of the artificial sweetners. i drank isopure zero carb for a short while
until i couldn’t make myself drink those either.
i still can’t eat a whole sandwich at a sitting and often will take 1/2 an hr to
eat a half and then i throw out most of the whole grain bread i use because
bread doesn’t sit well. this is true for many of us. usually what i do is have
very dry toast with 2 soft boiled or scrambled eggs in the morning or leftover
meat or chicken or turkey. at 11 months cold protein over a salad goes down
better than sandwiches as does cheese and crackers. i use a cracker instead of
bread most of the time and like rye crisp because they are whole grain. like
barbara says they taste like bark, good bark though.
the problem is that we are all different and heal at different rates and can
tolerate foods at different rates. the one thing we all have in common in the
beginning is that we will not starve on a very limited food intake. that is the

I need some advice/help and prayers

As most of you know, I’m scheduled for surgery 12/27 at Southcrest. Last
Monday right about the time I was leaving work I did “something” to my right
knee. Just a little history…BAD KNEES!!! Both have had surgery before and
right now I have a NON REPAIRED ACL tear on the right one.
Anyway, I work for the P.O., it’s December AND I’m going to be out for QUITE
A WHILE in a few weeks, so I really didn’t want to “admit” that I had once
again done “something” to my knee. My husband met me at work because we were
going to go to Dr. B’s support group after dinner.
However, after dinner I told him I thought we better go to ER instead of the
meeting as it was becoming increasingly difficult to walk. After about 3-4
hours in ER, I was sent home with a full length splint on my leg to
immobilize my knee and told to see my PCP today.
Well, needless to say, being MO and having to use crutches DOES NOT MIX!!!
Thank God I have such a wonderful husband. I did “use” the crutches in the
house, but my husband rented me a wheelchair to use outside the house…not

I’m Alive and on the other side!

Hi everyone,
I want to thank all of you who have sent me words of hope,
encouragement and support. I had my surgery 12/2/02, laparoscopic
RNY. I couldn’t believe there was literally no pain. I have had many
surgeries and always awoke in recovery begging for pain medication.
Not this time. I only used the morphine pump on the 2nd day. On the
3rd day, I had the upper GI and it was great…no leaks! Now I am
learning to eat all over again. What can I have, what to avoid.
Drink slowly or it hurts a little.
Dr. Quebbemann said it took 3 hours and it was a textbook surgery. He
is the greatest and I know I was guided to him.
I will be lurking to learn everything I can.
Love to all and thanks again,
Nan Hodge

I Bought the Business!

Congratulations Barbara!
What an incredible realization of a dream. I don’t post often, but read lots.
You are such an inspiration to me. I see so many of y’all who are a year or more
out and hear about the lives you can now live and the positive changes you’ve
made and I am ever more convinced this is right for me. Especially you, Barbara.
Thanks for sharing your joy. One of my dreams that’s beginning to look more like
a goal is to have a private practice (I’m a licensed counselor) in a place large
enough to also have a studio. Go one place and work and play - now how much fun
is that?!? Sounds like you already know. ;-) I don’t have a surgery date yet, but think it will be late spring-ish. Yep, I
bit the bullet and am going to see Dr. John Baker in Little Rock, AR, as soon as
my lousy insurance approves me.
Cheering for you!

Needing advice

Thursday, April 28th, 2005

Hi Group!
I am having a bit of trouble. I had surgery on 10-28-02 and I feel almost
like I am scared to eat. I eat fine @ work. I eat my sandwich or whatever it
is I am having, usually a sandwich though, and when I get home I eat dinner,
but I always feel like I’ve eaten too much. Not neccessarily because I’m so
full but because I’m scared to eat too much because I dont want to slow down
the weight loss process. This leads to me making myself sick thinking about
it. So I get sick. I try not to puke up too much because I do want a little
food in my system, but almost everynight I get sick. Sometimes however I have
to get sick because there feels like there is something stuck in my throat,
or when I drink water (30 mins later) I burp up food. It’s quite disgusting
and I am getting scared that I might rupture my staple line from getting
sick. Also, it’s hard for me to tell my limit on food right now. I only
started eating solid foods a week and a half ago, and when I first started I
could only eat half of my sandwich, but now I can eat almost the whole thing.

bowel prep

Hi. Yep. that’s it. one bottle magnesium citrate. Put it in the freezer for
a while (but not too long, it comes in a glass bottle) it’s a lot easier to
take very cold. almost taste like sprite if you get it cold enough. It’s not
the mildest thing in the world, but works fast and thoroughly. As for the fleet
enema. If you have someone to help you with that it will make it a lot easier.
I personally wish i had a video of mine. In retrospect (actually I got a laugh
out of it then) it was hilariaous to try to give yourself an enema when you can
barely reach your bottom. *lol* Much success on your journey!
