Monday, June 27th, 2005

I just noticed the following typo in my previous post:
It was supposed to be “VBG” for vertical banded gastroplasty… sorry for

What happens if you get a stomach bug?

Monday, June 27th, 2005

There’s a lot of the Norwalk virus going around my area, a *really*
nasty stomach bug which causes awful vomiting and diahrrhea. How
would that effect us with the little stomach pouch? I’ve thrown up
just a couple of times on stuck food, but it wasn’t really like being
sick before. If you get a bug, is it like “normal” vomiting? Is
there any danger to the staple line in the pouch?
I’m going to be doing a lot of hand washing this winter!

Can’t Wait

As you all know I have been having severe problems with my knee lately, now
my feet are swollen does anyone know if this could have something to do with
my knee?

moving forward with baby steps

Monday, June 27th, 2005

thanks to all who responded to my “MIXED EMOTIONS” email the other
day. It just blows me away you guys share so much with anyone who
writes for support like I did. So what did I find out? That my
reactions are quite normal, and that I might continue to feel this
way before, during, and after the surgery. Whew! What a relief.
That the way Im feeling is pretty much normal–wow.
I’ve started thinking about the upcoming surgery in a different light.
I’m thinking about being prepared. I went out and bought TUMS, and
chewable flintstone vitamins, and a large bottle of Tylenol. I also
looked for this silicone foot pad from Dr. Scholl’s that supposed to
be great when you apply it to your scar — I can’t find anything that
says “silicone” most all the footpads are made from a gel substance.
I was really hoping to find that. My next set of baby steps was
getting one of my doctor’s to reduce the size of my meds to smaller
than an M&M. Then my next baby step is part of a grand plan to clean

Gastric tube & bowel prep

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

I have noticed that some surgeons use a gastric tube while others
don’t. I have also noticed the same for the “bowel prep”. Are these
unnecessary tortures or is there a reason why some Dr.s use them
while others don’t? Thanks once again for your input guys! Kris

Try Jerky for Your Salt Craving

Saturday, June 25th, 2005

This may be a guy thing but I can satisfy a salt craving quickly and
effectively with a small piece of beef, turkey or chicken jerky. The
bonus is that there are no carbs and plenty of protein. Just remember
to chew, chew, chew!

Getting Prepared

Saturday, June 25th, 2005

Since Walter Reed Army Hospital in DC has a two year waiting list for
bariatric surgery, TRICARE/Sierra Health Services (my military
insurance) has helped me find a surgeon in my “area” and set me up
with the first three appointments (Bariatric Discussion Group, a
Nutritional Consultation and my Individual Consult with the surgeon).
Have any of you heard anything about or had your surgery with Dr.
Hazem Elariny (Advanced Laparoscopic & General Surgery Associates)in
Arlington, VA?
The people in his office seem truly nice. The packet of information
they sent was extremely helpful.

Chew well

Saturday, June 25th, 2005

Aimykins, I have a similar problem if I eat to big a piece of food, dont chew
well enough, or eat too much. I dont know if this helps, but be sure to
watch the size of your food pieces, and chew chew chew. Tema
