Time frames

Friday, July 29th, 2005

I wondered if post-ops & pre-ops in process would share (I know they
will widely diff) the time frame it took from, deciding to have
surgery, to getting insurance approval, to finding a surgeon to
surgery date?
Thank you!

Michellekf777 presurgery fears

Friday, July 29th, 2005

Hi Michelle,
I’m 13 days post op (open RNY/GB) and I can identify with the
fears that you are experiencing. About 3 days before my surgery I
had a total panic breakdown - called my dietician and asked her
if going back to dieting etc would be successful (it hadn’t for
many years). She had me talk with another WLS client of hers
and she shared all the wonders of success one experiences
after the surgery. Also my dietician reminded me of the
additional medical problems I have related to excessive weight -
saying that these will continue to get worse and more limiting of
my activity level.
Yes, it’s initially painful & I didn’t like the idea of being put to
sleep but now I’d do it all over again. I take pain meds once or
so a day (continuing to cut down on meds) depending on what I
want to do - eat pureed foods - watch myself with bending and

Protein Solution is spamming and probably trolling

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Folks proteinsolution@… is now spamming me asking me to recommend their
drinks
their lists. They won’t. They continue to spam the hell out of me about
recommending this to WLS patients — I won’t. I truthfully don’t like their
business practices — they are preying on people who have had this surgery and
spamming the hell out of them. I guess I should feel honored due to the company
this puts me in — when they wrote me they also sent it to Dr. Fox, Dr. Dennis
SMith and about a dozen others that seemed to be dr something or other. How I
got in that group I don’t know but I hope they are not lurking on these lists. I
am doing my part though — PROTEIN SOLUTIONS SHOULD NOT BE BOUGHT FROM. They
engage in spam and refuse to remove people from mailing lists when they ask. I
wouldn’t trust their web site for anything. Nor their product. Also if you are
on obesityhelp.com they seem to be trolling their as well for emails. One of
their spams mentions that site. I plan to complain over there as well but wanted
to warn you all about them.

New member - with questions

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Hi
My name is Evy, and I’m 2 weeks away from saying yes and signing on
the dotted line for bypass surgery. I have spent the last couple of
hours reading some of the past postings and I did not run across one
person from Canada. I only mention this because I am in Toronto and I
know that there are some slight differences with regards to protocol
in the U.S. and Canada. Insurance I am not concerned with as it is
covered by the Canadian OHIP plan however, I did have to fall into a
very specific group first (100lbs over weight <I’m 150 over
27 or more <I’m @ 53
weight). I also noticed that in the U.S. there seems to be more
variations of the surgery, I was only given information on 2 types of
surgery - Divided Gastric Bypass (ROUX-Y) and Vertical Banded
Gastroplasty. My surgeon will be performing the ROUX-Y surgery if I
sign on the dotted line. I had to go through a lot of testing to get

Spicy post-ops

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Hello All!
I am in the research/contemplating stage of WLS. I have found this
site extremely helpful and also addictive!
Thank you to all for the wonderful wealth of info!
I have a possibly silly question, but here it goes..
Do post-ops (after the gentle recovery time) have to beware of spicy
foods?
Thank you again for the insight and info!

?’s about Dr’s

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Hi Friends!
My co-worker is considering WLS but does not have a computer to do research
about the Dr’s she is interested in. So she wants to know if any of you have had
either Dr. Peter Hollowell or Dr. Anthony Udekwu and if so could you tell her a
little about your experience with them? I believe both these surgeons are from
the Cleveland Ohio area. I will print your messages and take them to her.
Thank you for your help.
Hugs!

Hair today…curls tomorrow?

Thursday, July 28th, 2005

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to share with you my “hairy” story. I had RNY in June of 2000,
have been maintaining my 100+ weight loss for almost two years, and enjoy
wonderful health now. But I did experience that old post-op hair loss, which
I know many of you worry about.
Mine began about 6 months out, which seems to be the norm, at which time the
drains in my house began to get clogged with my falling locks of hair. Mind
you, my hair was always baby-fine and not thick, so I didn’t welcome this
development. Everyone has a theory about post-op hairloss, none of which seem
conclusive, and the truth is probably that it’s luck of the draw. I was
taking my vitamins, eating my protein, shampooing with Nioxin, blah, blah,
blah.
So…it got pretty thin up there. I had it cut in a chin-length blunt cut,
but watched my hairline look more and more sparse. Just as I reckoned I’d
better shop for a wig, the process slowed down. But the hair continued to

Upset-have to reschedule

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

Hello,
Just had a fight with my mom because she wants me to reschedule my
appointment for my consult two weeks later then planned. Right now I am
livign with my parents to HELP them raise my two nieces, so i stay home all
day long and watch them so she can work, I have three kids during the day
mine and my two nieces and everything seems to have to be scheduled around my
parents schedule. So monday through Friday I have them plus I go to work at
night. Right now I am just bit upset, because I feel that she she should be
able to take this time off for me. What should I do? I am so afraid that when
I try and reschedule that they wont have any openings in two weeks, I dont
want to wait anymore.

Still doing research so please don’t take offense…

Wednesday, July 27th, 2005

When I first read the literature about WLS, without
reading about the personal experiences of the people
on the lists, it seemed that Lapband would be a no
brainer because as someone said “you’re plumbing
doesn’t get rearranged” and it was a much less
invasive procedure so recovery would be fast.
After spending a lot of time mostly on the bandster
lists (but also this one), I picked out a local
surgeon based on the manufacturer’s site — which
showed which doctors were certified in the lapband
procedure. At my first consult a couple weeks ago, I
was very impressed even though when I said “I think I
want to have lapband,” he immediately told me it was
too early to decide “what kind” of WLS until we
learned more about my health and the other procedures.
