I thought Proximal, Medial and Distal procedures were based on the
"Common Channel" length remaining after the entero-enterostomy?????
I would get your operative report and see how much of a common channel
length is remaining and then review Ray's definitions at
www.bariatricsupplementsystem.com (good descriptions of what
Proximal, Medial and Distal are)
I know BTC does the standard bypass of 150com of the duodenum and
jejunum, but the actual absorption takes place in the Common
Channel....Ray, am I wrong on this??

Open RNY 2/8/02
Dr. Marymor at BTC Ypsi

common channel length of 460cm = Proximal procedure for me!

Nancy if you are talking about yourself how can you say it isn't working?
You have lost probably 20% of your excess weight in less than two months.
THat is PHENOMONAL! This is if you have 150 pounds to lose -- to get to 120
and you probably do not want to get that low. So if you only have 120 pounds
to lose that is 25% OF YOUR EXCESS WEIGHT GONE! It is working. Give it
time and quit comparing your numbers to everyone else. In a 12-24 months you
will lose between 60-80% of your excess weight if not more. But at least 60
to 80%. By my calculations -- at two months out you are on a great run.

Mabye the office girls I spoke to did'nt know what they were talking about? That
certainly wouldn't surprise me!
I called my doctor and asked if my surgery was distal or proximal and the nurse
said "what are you talking about" Then I explained what I was asking and she
looked at my chart and said she couldn't find anything relating to what I was
asking. She said, "you'll have to wait until you see the doctor and ask him
yourself." So it is very clear to me, that just because they work for a
surgeron who does this surgery, doesn't mean they understand the process.

difference in weight loss?

Or even if they *do* speak English, might have zero clue about
what an RNY even is.
When I first started this journey I had a really crappy insurance plan. I
went to my PCP and told her I was seriously considering gastric bypass
surgery. She said, (Now are you ready for this?) "I don't think we approve
liposuction here." Argghhh!!! That made me change plans real quick and it
was the smartest thing I ever did.

I neither know nor care how much intestine was bypassed or any other details of
my surgery. I know it works and that's all I care about. It's never occurred
to me to ask.

Sheila,
I don't know which surgeon you had at BTC in Belvedere, Illinois, but I know Dr.
Boe (sp?) only does proximal, and I would believe the same protocol goes for all
the surgeons there. I think they are standard with a 30cc pouch and proximal
open RNY.
You can always call them and have them pull your chart and see.
