Out of Hospital - Need to MAKE Myself Eat?
I am home and feeling half way human. Dr. had to do open instead of
lap when he got in because of scar tissue. It has been absolutely
horrible to say the least. Right now I regret my decision but hope
that will change as time goes on.
My question is am I hurting myself by only eating no sugar added
juice bars (Dr. recommends 2 wks. liquid diet in beginning - been 1
wk. today)? I have tried other things such as sugar free carn.
instant breakfast made with soy milk but it almost makes me sick
thinking of it. I know some of you were on a soft diet by the 2nd
wk. I have been seriously thinking of trying this. I feel like I
need to be getting something in but my body just doesn’t want it. Do
I need to make myself? Thanks all!

It will definitely get better, just give it time. And don’t worry about eating
anything for the first couple of weeks — you have enough stored so that you
aren’t going to starve. The most important thing right now is to stay hydrated,
so drink any non-sugar liquid you can. And don’t forget to walk.

I wouldn’t worry so much about eating right now—your body has enough to keep
you nourished for the time being—but do try and get some form of protein
in–you need that to keep healthy and to help your healing. I couldn’t eat for
4 months–I barely ate anything. All protein drink made me sick, I became
lactose intolerent after surgery and I can’t drink soy milk because I am
hypothyroid and soy is bad for people with thyroid disease. I basically lived
on cheese and eggs when I was allowed to eat—and carrots. At 2 weeks out I
was basically eating yogurt and juice pops. I am just now, nearly 9 months out,
getting my appetite back, although if busy I can easily go through the day
without feeling hungry. Make sure you are taking your vitamins—concentrate on
getting in some form of protein that is allowed by your doctor at 2 weeks out.
I wouldn’t recommend trying a soft diet unless you discuss it with your doctor
first—although to be honest, I did start eating different foods before it was
time, and I certainly learned my lesson! Talk to your doctor about your
concerns, or the nutritionist with his practice if he has one. They are the
best people to tell you what to try to get some food in. At this early out, if
you are feeling ok and healing ok—I wouldn’t worry about it.
Good luck to you!

Sorry to hear you’re having such a rough time. I suppose it’s a
surprise when you go in for a lap and come out with an open.
I was on liquids for three weeks. Things I was allowed that tasted good
was broth, light cranberry-grape juice, cream of chicken soup, cream of
wheat cereal made really thin. We were allowed yogurt, but I couldn’t
eat that cause it was sweetened with Aspartame. We were also allowed
the CIB, but again the Aspartame, so I made a protein drink with
Designer Protein and 2% milk. Don’t know how soy milk woulda gone down,
though.
Good luck to you.
