B-12 Question

Hi everyone. I had surgery (Open Proximal RNY) on Jan.28, 2003. I
have FINALLY gotten to my goal on the amount of water I should be
drinking, the amount of protein per day…and the correct amount of
vitamins according to my surgeon. However, I have tried and tried
to take the sublingual B-12 pills. Everytime I try to take them, I
get really sick and lose everything! Other than the B-12
injections, is there any other form of it that I could take? I have
an appointment with my surgeon on Wednesday of next week, so I’m
planning to ask him then but thought I’d see if any of you have any
suggestions. I know if I swallow the B-12 pills I have they’ll lose
the sublingual effect, but is that something I can do? I have had
NONE since surgery. It’s the taste, the texture of it as it
dissolves in my mouth…I don’t know. All I know is that I can’t do
it. Any advice?
Thanks in advance,

Michelle

You might try another brand. I get them at Trader Joe’s and they don’t have
any taste or texture when they dissolve.
Other than that, I have no ideas, sorry.

There is liquid sublingual b12 as well. It is a little bitter, but I let it
sit under my tongue for 30 seconds and then spit it out…works for me! And
you’re right, if you swallow the pills, they won’t be effective.
    Hope this helps!

On the same question idea… My dietician recommends one tablet a
day if you swallow it and one a week if you take it sublingually. I
am still pre-op and wondering if others take the sublingual B-12
    daily?

Wow - really? I checked out four different programs and all of them
require B-12, either SL or injections. Considering our new anatomy (you
are an RNY? right?). Have you had lab work done? And it was OK?

Question…..my doc gave me the huge horse pill B-12. I couldn’t take them
and gave up on even trying. I did purchase some really small B-12 pills
that dissolve on your tongue - I’m being stupid here, but is that the same
as sublingual??? Or does it have to dissolve under your tongue for it to be
    considered sublingual?

    considered sublingual
The “ling” in sublingual means “tongue” and is the same root as our word for
language, bi-lingual etc. So “sub” lingual literally means “under the tongue.”
If you swallow it directly it wouldn’t be considered sub-lingual.
