5 years after bypass..triathlon and personal training

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Hi everyone..
Almost five years ago, I joined this list for help, support and hope. I was
35, 5′0″ and 380lbs. My doctors had told me the chances of me being able to
walk without a cane in the next two years was unlikely and the possibilities
of me seeing 40 were nil. I had to do something.
I had an open RNY…and to date I have lost 180lbs. I am now entering a new
phase of my life and would love some feedback from people in this list about
my next move.
I have been very active since my weight loss. I have run over 9 sprint
triathlons and done one 80 mile adventure race that I completed in 30hours.
I feel so blessed to be able to accomplish these races that I want to help
others get in shape after bypass and feel good about their health and
strength.
I am considering becoming a personal trainer. My question to all of you is:
How would you feel about using a trainer who was still working on losing the

I looked at the Detour bars today at GNC. They have 9 g. of sugar per bar –
more than I want, so I passed on them and got some more Atkins bars instead.

Prayers and Good Thoughts

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Hello everyone–
I haven’t posted here for a while, but I do have a prayer
request. I am unable to have wls (at least for now) because I have a written
exclusion in my insurance policy. I have found that they will approve a breast
reduction and a
panniculectomy if medically necessary, and so, I am having those
procedures done this Friday at about noon.
I just ask that as you go through your prayer lists for the next few days,
please add my name to the list, and pray for a quick and complication-free
recovery for me.
I would really appreciate all the good thoughts and prayers you can send my
way–

One month out

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Hi all,
Well, its been a month since my surgery. I’m feeling better every
week that goes by although I admit I feel tired sometimes. It’s
been a rough February weather wise. With all the snow and ice and
frigid weather I wasn’t able to get all my daily walking in. Since
I wasn’t allowed to drive I couldn’t get to the mall. But today I
got a good walk in going up and down a steep hill and I wasn’t
panting and laboring with my breathing. A benefit of WLS!
I’ve only lost twenty pounds but I am happy with it. It’s twenty
pounds I’ll never see again! My clothes are way big on me and I’m
glad I was a pack rat and saved all my old clothes before I was this
heavy. My watch flew off my wrist yesterday and landed in the
garbage pail. (LOL) At least I can say I lost weight in my wrists!
More great news is that I no longer have to take my diabetic
medications. My readings are wonderful! I think I’m sleeping better

Questions about sugar-free treats

Friday, October 21st, 2005

Lori,
Everyone is different in what they choose to consume after surgery. We all know
what types of food got us to the point of needing WLS in the first place, but
yet some go right back to old habits and either don’t lose the amount of weight
they want/need to or end up with a huge regain. I am diligent in trying not to
become like this.
As far as sugar goes, I have found myself perusing the ice cream aisle and
finding the fat free/sugar free ice cream several times, only to scold myself
and walk away. I want to develop healthy habits for life, not add empty calories
just because I can justify them as fat free or sugar free.
I won’t even try real sugar on or in anything. I don’t want to know if I can
tolerate it or not. The only sugar I consume is from fruit, when I have a sweet
tooth, I eat grapes, or make decaf hot tea and put some splenda in it. I cut out
the sweets entirely besides those two things and only consume those when I have
a “craving.” I make sure they are not a staple of my diet anymore.

substitute foods

Baby food? Of course, just add some salt n pepper and spices to make it
palatable. Homemade stuff sweetened with splenda? You bet! Go for it all!

Quick Post-op survey - would you do it over again?

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

I’m in the final pre-op stages and would like to hear back from as
many people as possible on the following questions. I am
particularly interested in hearing from those who are in a similar
age/weight/health condition as I am: age 29-40, pre-op weight 230-
280, good overall health.
1. If you knew pre op what you know now, would you do it again?
2. What are the top 3 benefits that the surgery has brought to your
life?
3. What are the top 3 downfalls that surgery has brought to your life?
4. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best rating, how would you
rate your overall outcome from having the surgery?
5. Did the results you have obtained from the surgery exceed, meet,
or fail to meet your expectations pre-op?
Thank you!!!
