This is my first time writing to the group. I have been reading the postings,
hoping to find someone that had their surgery back in the 80’s. From the sounds
of things, the surgery has changed a lot, and isn’t as evasive as it was when I
had it done. I had a 7 day hospital stay, and have a scar that is about 12″
long. It’s been 22 years since I had my surgery, commonly known in that day, as
stomach stapling, or gastric bypass. I was 25 years old, weighed 250 lbs, and
dropped to 125 in about a year & a half. I had no group to consult with, nor a
lot of direction from my Dr. about what to do or expect after surgery, other
than some dietary instruction for about the first 6 weeks. I am now 47, and I
have gained back close to 75 lbs of the 125 I lost, and am trying a number of
things to get it back off. Any suggestions are deeply appreciated.
I just had knee surgery, so am limited on the exercise issue for awhile. How
often does the stapling come undone, and what would be the symptoms? I very
rarely have the sensation to throw up anymore. I can eat more, a medium size
chicken breast & about a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of veggies, is about the portion I can

Hello all
I had the surgery Nov. 7th and have lost 95 lbs. I am 40 lbs away from
goal….I am exercising everyday but finding it hard to do the exercises I would
like to do (aerobics/step/kickboxing, etc) because of all the FLAB I have….My
arms, legs and stomach are just awful (among other places). I also lost weight
in my breasts at just the right spot and they have seriously headed south! :):)
Does anyone know when doctors decide to do the plastic surgery? Does the same
surgeon do it? Can all the surgeries be done at the same time? Does insurance
pay, ever? I know I can ask the doctor but I would like opinions from you guys
and what experiences you have had. PLEASE let me know. All opinions greatly
appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Annette

Hi everyone. I have been reading and learning a lot from all the
posts. I feel you are all close friends with whom I can share just
about anything. And I thank all of you for that.
Well yesterday, I had my 3-month check-up with my surgeon. I had
one goal when I went into my appointment…I wanted to be under the
300# mark. Well, I did it!!!! I weighed in at 299#. I know it
doesn’t seem like much to some people, after all 299# is still
extremely obese. I on the other hand think it’s great, it’s a 76#
loss in three months! I have made other goals too, such as fitting
into a booth in a restaurant, and fitting into the seats in the
auditorium at the school where my children are involved in concerts,
plays, etc.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my excitement with all my friends.
God Bless you all!
Shelley

Cost-effectiveness of gastric bypass for severe obesity.
Craig BM, Tseng DS.
Department of Population Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin,

PURPOSE: To estimate the cost-effectiveness of gastric bypass in the
treatment of severe obesity. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We performed a cost-
effectiveness analysis of gastric bypass versus no treatment from the
payer perspective. We discounted quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs),
life-years, and cost during the patient’s lifetime. Our target group
comprised women and men aged 35 to 55 years with a body mass index

Thank you to all who kindly responded to my concerns regarding post-
op weight gain and the RNY surgery being a two year vs. a life-long
tool. It gave me much to think about from many perspectives.
So what have you heard about the duodenal switch surgery, good or
bad? Several people responded suggesting that I look in to that as
an alternative to the RNY, as it may do a better job for some in
keeping weight off long term. I went to the web site but I want to
know what people out there have heard.
I have been relatively thin (140/size 10) twice in my life after
losing a bunch of weight. Both times, I worked my BUTT off to lose
it, reaped GREAT rewards beyond my wildest dreams, vowed I’d never be
fat again, and both times, I regained the weight anyway. I just
don’t want to be in the same boat and, despite all great efforts and
intentions, regain the weight after such drastic, risky measures like
RNY. If duodenal switch surgery is viable, then I want to explore

Hi everyone!! I am a bit frustrated. I started this venture Feb.
2002 and have run into some obstacles….mainly the psych eval.
Well, I finally got that situated and was planning on having Open RNY
sometime in late May. Well, 2 weeks ago I fell rollerskating and
landed on my knee. I have strained tendons and will start PT on
Monday. Now that I am out of work for at least 3 weeks I am going to
have to postpone surgery until the Fall. I don’t feel comfortable
being out now and then out again in May for about 6 weeks. Grrrrr. I
am just frustrated. I wanted to have this done and over with
already. I feel the longer I wait the more aprehenisve I become. I
do have a question though. Does anyone have an idea how long the
doctor would keep the pre-op tests results before making a patient
have them done again? I had seen the pulmonologist last April and
have seen the rest this past fall. Any idea? I would appreciate
it. Thanks for all your postings. I really enjoy reading.
