New to group looking for advice

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Its been two weeks since my surgery and it has been an ok journey. I
guess even with all the research it is hard to tell exactly what to
expect afterwards. Im having a real hard time eating the liquid diet.
I never was a big soup person before and now I just don’t want to
eat. And the protein shakes, that is taking an act of god to finish
one 12 ounce glass a day they are really heavy and don’t make me feel
well.I really want to make this work, does anyone have any tips or
suggestions, recipes or what not. Anyways any help or friendly words
would be great.
Thanks
Jenna

dentures

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

not a silly question at all. a good friend of mine who lost about 170 lbs had to
have all new dentures made. they no longer fit. ymmv but it is totally logical
that you may shrink out of your dentures. in my case the size and shape of my
eyeballs changed and i needed completely new glasses. the prescription changed
dramatically. in any case wait as long as possible to act since you may have to
do it more than once. think of it in terms of clothing. you keep changing sizes
of clothes and “other things” too.

Walking — Day 3 — SICKNESS

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

OKay lets recap. STarted walking on WEdnesday. Finished in approximately 22
minutes and some seconds. THursday — which according to the program is not
supposed to have any structured walk — I walked a mile in 18:45. Then I went to
the Brooks and Dunn concert and walked quite a bit there. Part of it in the
pouring rain. I dont know how far I actually walked yesterday but it was quite a
bit.
So today, I get up with very little sleep. Am sore. Am tired. Am cranky. Run my
errands — get my daughter a haircut (she’s two — that was a struggle), go to
Olive Garden for Lunch (order soup, salad and breadsticks — eat salad and too
many breadsticks — puke in the bathroom — oh lied and told the woman in the
next stall that morning sickness sometimes lasts all day because i really didn’t
want to get into a dissertation while vomiting. she offered to go get me some
soda crackers and 7-Up to settle my stomach. Came back and didn’t touch the
soup, waiter asked what the problem was and I said nothing i just wasn’t as
hungry as i thought — he took my bill away and removed my lunch and when I

Thanks and response to “am i the only one”

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

Thanks everyone for all the wonderful emails about my post the other
day! This is one heck of a journey that is for sure!!! :o)
Now in response to am i the only one… nope just like the others
said… i too have had issues with diarreha since i had the surgery
and that was 3 months ago. I too was not lactose intolerate before
the surgery but have become since the surgery. But i also seem to
just have diarreha. I have tried many different things, meds and what
not and they have not done much to stop it. It seem that whatever I
put in my mouth has a risk of causing me to have diarreha (in a
sense).
What my nutritionist and surgeon have come to the conclusion is that
my body is losing fat at such a rapid pace and that i am excersing
so much (walking every day 1.5 to 3 miles daily and gym 3-5x’s a week)
and that my food intake is good but minimal because i truely have to
fight myself to eat because I don’t get hungry that is the cause of my

Gab’s problem

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Gabs -
Waht are you eating? And I’m not asking because I think it’s your fault - my
doc’s patients are on clear liquids for 4 weeks. When you take in nothing but
liquids, you put out nothing but liquids. Also, if your diet is high in milk,
sugar, etc., your problem may be related to dumping, even if you don’t
experience the palpitations, etc. And I think that SOME diarhea is part of the
process of adjusting . . .

cycle question

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

I am 3 weeks postop. I never cycled without progerterone preop. I did
have some slight bleeding in the hospital, but it ended as soon as I
stopped taking the blood thinner (it was a combination of that an my
IUD, which had me spotting for months until recently). I haven’t had
anything close to a real period since January. Should I expect that the
low-carb/weight loss will actually bring on a period, or should I get a
scrip from my OB/GYN? Anyone have the surgery and not eventually get a
period?

gallbladder and hair loss

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Hi everyone,
I have a couple of questions. My doctor mentioned about taking my gallbladder
out at the same time as he does the surgery in October. He said that some times
people will develop gall stones after the WLS.
I told my daughter and she became real upset saying that I needed it to store
bile. She went on to say that I shouldn’t have anything done other than what I
needed. Can anyone comment on this. Is it a normal procedure to have the
gallbladder removed with WLS?
Also someone had mentioned hair loss and what to use to prevent it from
becoming extreme. I wrote the product name down but can’t for the life of me
find it. Can someone please refresh my memory.
Thank you
Marie

Privacy during wls is now impossible

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

I had my surgery in 1999. The only people I told were 2 close
friends at work and immediate family. Even before Carny Wilson and
Al Roker, before Rosanne, before all of the publicity, everyone
figured it out.
Two especially nosy coworkers cornered one of my friends and point-
blank asked him if I had my stomach stapled or a hysterectomy. (Why
anyone gives a rat’s hiney about my uterus or stomach is beyond me,
but it happened. They all knew I’d had cancer in the past, so some
of it was genuine concern.)
My friend sent a global e-mail telling people that I had endured
major surgery and would not want to talk about my situation when I
returned to work. We also told everyone that I was OK and the cancer
had not returned.
Anyway, everyone knew I’d had my “stomach stapled.” I came back to
work and had already lost 65 pounds in 6 weeks. People ain’t dumb.

Just beginning the journey

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

I am very early in the process of being approved for and having
weight loss surgery. My PCP is supportive. I’m very willing to run
thru the hoops to get this done. All encouragement welcome.
