11 days post-op everything i’m doing is wrong!

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

Hi, everyone. I’ve been lurking for awhile, never posted though. I’m
11 days post-op from OPEN RNY. I’m 5′1″, started at 227.6, am at
215.2. I was happy to lose quite a bit of weight right off (13 lbs.
as of 6 days post-op), but then gained back .4 lbs, and the scale
hasn’t moved for 5 days. I’m having a hard time adjusting to post-op
eating (despite months of research), and don’t know whether i’m
eating not enough or too much. the problem is, i don’t know what
is “normal” and what isn’t. Our pre-op nutrition class covered WHAT
to eat, but not HOW MUCH. For instance, I’m on Day Four of Pureed or
soft foods, and according to my doctor’s diet, am eligible to start
soft, mechanical foods (like well chewed meat). I don’t think i’m
eating that much, but have gotten feedback that indicates i’m able
to eat more than most people when they were at the same stage i’m
at. Yesterday’s diet (10 days post-op): milk-soaked multigrain Chex
cereal 2 oz, bananas 1 oz, beans 2 oz, pot roast 2 oz, mashed pot 2

just beginning the procedure

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Hi everyone! I am so happy to find this forum; it seems I have so
many questions. I attended my first seminar tonight and will have my
initial appointment with the surgeon on July 25th. I am very excited
and nervous. I have reserched the surgery and feel informed about
the medical procedure–but what will the first 3-5 days post-op be
like? How long did you stay home from work? How long on liquid
food? Did any of you suffer hair loss? What are the drawbacks? Do
you think it was all worth it?

surgery date has been moved up

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Hi all,
My orginal wls date was 7-29-03, however, today I had to go to the hospital and
take my chest x-ray, gallballder ultrasound, and and EGD. While there, I ran
into a young lady I had met at the first seminar I had attended and she told me
her surgery day is 7-22-03. After awakening from my test my doctor asked me if
I would like to do my surgery on 7-22-03 because the young lady has to be put on
medication for 2 weeks before she has her surgery so that left an earlier slot
for me. Well needless to say I agreed while still under sedation, and now that
I am home and awake I am having those feelings of uncertainty again, I guess it
is that I had siked my mind up for the 29th and now all of a sudden it’s right
around the corner. Please give me some advice to comfort me, I really need to
get to the point of being comfortable again.

Talking to family

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

Jeanette…Just remember months down the road when you are dropping all kinds
of weight and looking and feeling great you will have a chance to say your
peace. You will have to be sure to let both of your aunts know that you hope
they are happy that they made this so much worse for you. They sent you into
surgery feeling very badly and very scared. Believe me they will be your
biggest supporters when they start to see results and see that you don’t in fact
have to live the rest of your life on baby food. Plain old ignorance!!!! Just
make sure that at some time you get a chance to let them know that they both
should be ashamed of their behavior. Their job was not to judge simply to be
there for you and support you and try to make it as easy and stress free as
possible. That is what love is…they need to learn.. There are certainly
enough
people out there who will judge you…family does not need to do that…Please
for me let them know that their behavior was mean spirited and childish..you
will do fine with them our without them.

Northwestern Hospital in Chicago

Monday, May 22nd, 2006

At long last and after much soul-searching and research I have chosen
Northwestern Hospital in Chicago for my surgery. I have been recommended for
Laproscopic, but I’d really like to understand the pros and cons of Laproscopic
and Open from those of you who have already had the experience.
Also, I’d like to hear from anyone who had their surgery done at Northwestern.
Just when I think I’ve asked all my questions I find more! Thanks in advance
for your valuable input.

Just wanted to shout a big thank you to Leslie and Heather for so eloquently
stating what had been on my mind since the <300 lb discussion started.

Sophie’s surgery

Sunday, May 21st, 2006

Hi all, Will try to update again later on today. Sophie just went into
the OR. She had definitely decided not to have an epidural - was too
scared. But everyone today tried to convince her to do it. I wasn’t there
when the needle went in. Asked me to leave, it being a sterile procedure.
Surgeon, his asst., the nurse, the anesthesiologist, the resident
anesthesiologist and a little bit of me recommended it. Very reluctantly
she agreed. So she just went to the OR. Please say your prayers for Sophie
and my mom.
Paula - My thoughts are with you today as yours are with us. Sophie
didn’t get to see your last e-mail before surgery. But she must be feeling
your wishes even under anesthesia.
Melissa - I am praying for you and Scott. Praying very hard,so hope the
prayers work. You have been through so much.
Jeff and Jessica - So sorry about the miscarriage. Wish I knew what else
to say. It will happen when the time is right.
