Cathy,
I think everyone in this group can understand your being nervous
about surgery! I had my Medial RNY on July 23rd and was a nervous
wreck for the days before it. All kinds of things blasted through my
thoughts even though I truly knew I realy wanted to have it. I even
thought about backing out right up until I reached the hospital. I
always managed to make it through the panic moments by reminding
myself of all of the success stories I have read on these groups and
in my research. I think it’s normal to be scared. Surgery always is
scarey! Changing your entire eating lifestyle is scarey. But, it’s
the rewards in your life afterwards that make it the right thing to
do!

1 year out and leg cramps

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Hello everyone yesterday on 082603 was my 1 year anniversay. All I
have to say is wow! It feels so good. Even though I have only lost 85
lbs its such a difference in my life. The last weekend my family and
I went to a party and I wore a tank top and it started to get cold. I
asked my 13 year old son for his shirt he looked at me and laughed.
He said yah right this wont fit you. I said give it to me I put it on
and it look better on me then on him. He was shocked that his mother
could fit in something of his. Also another thing I love is when I go
shopping. I am so use to going to the plus sizes. But now I still do
and it feels weird because nothing there fits but I still go there.
Now when I go to the regular sizes I feel as if everyone is just
looking at me and saying she does not belong on this side. Does
anyone else do these things? But I do have one question. In the last
week I have been woken up 3 times screaming because of a leg cramp I
get in the same place on the same leg. It really hurts so bad. Does

Subject: Am I full yet?

Friday, June 30th, 2006

Probably, esp. once you’re eating solid proteins. The mushy stuff can run thru
so quick that you never get the feeling of full.
Solid protein - beef, pork, or chicken, some protein bars that are dense, will
temporarily block the stoma, and create pressure in the pouch, producing a
feeling of fullness.
Ground meats, eggs and cheese will do this to some extent, but not as well.
Don’t eat soup or really wet foods, they will help to wash food out of the
pouch, making you lose the sensation of full.
Good luck -

VBG with sleeve versus VG (crosspost)

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Hi gang! I have a few questions for those of you who chose to have
the VBG with sleeve.
1. Why did you choose the VBG with sleeve over the VG?
2. Are you planning on having the DS eventually?
3. Did your insurance cover the VBG with sleeve?
4. Any other tidbits of information you feel pertinent to the VBG
with sleeve procedure?
I appreciate your insights!

I see Dr. Elariny on Friday for my initial consultation. I’m excited!

Joanie in Phoenix checks in

Hi Everybody,
I don’t post very often - I am lucky to get through 3-4 email lists a day on
WLS but the information is worth more than any doctor can tell you and it
seems all the docs have different ideas! We who go through it all know what
works and doesn’t work IMHO.
Im a slow loser I think and its probably due to not enough water and exercise
but I am finally getting started on the stationary bike… will surely help
the hanging belly!
I only eat 4 oz a meal, all protein. I buy only lean deli meats and low fat
cheeses; sometimes use the light flavored cream cheese and spread on the
lunchmeat; low fat cottage cheese is excellent for breakfast; make omelets with
egg beaters which saves calories! Save the real eggs for over easy or egg
salad!
I too use low cal whole wheat toast for a sandwich or with an egg, etc. I
only eat 3 meals and then have my two protein shakes - one in morning and one

Finding a GP

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

I have been researching various WLS options for over a year now and I am now
100% sure that the open RNY operation is the best chance I have to lose
weight/regain my health.
I am currently at a BMI of 61, age 28, and in the past year I have developed a
number of the listed co-morbidities.
However, coming from a family where the men avoid the doctor like the plague, I
have a problem. I have not seen a GP an over 18 months and prior to that my
last Dr’s visit was 3 or 4 years before. At the time I was curious about Atkins
or other effective methods of weight control.
His basic response was to rudely explain Atkins=bad, try SlimFast. The GP visit
18 months ago was horrible in every sense of the word and seriously discouraged
me from seeking assistance. I haven’t wanted to punch someone that badly since
Junior High. Is my experience something many of you have gone through or are
there truly Dr’s out there who are willing to help the Obese?
On top of all of this I have recently moved to Florida’s “Space Coast” and have

Star Jones

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

From TVGuide Online:
“Rumor has it that plus-sized View co-host Star Jones is planning to
undergo gastric bypass surgery.”
Wow… I’m surprised to hear that rumor. Hasn’t Star’s stance always
been anti-surgery?
