Finding a GP

I have been researching various WLS options for over a year now and I am now
100% sure that the open RNY operation is the best chance I have to lose
weight/regain my health.
I am currently at a BMI of 61, age 28, and in the past year I have developed a
number of the listed co-morbidities.
However, coming from a family where the men avoid the doctor like the plague, I
have a problem. I have not seen a GP an over 18 months and prior to that my
last Dr’s visit was 3 or 4 years before. At the time I was curious about Atkins
or other effective methods of weight control.
His basic response was to rudely explain Atkins=bad, try SlimFast. The GP visit
18 months ago was horrible in every sense of the word and seriously discouraged
me from seeking assistance. I haven’t wanted to punch someone that badly since
Junior High. Is my experience something many of you have gone through or are
there truly Dr’s out there who are willing to help the Obese?
On top of all of this I have recently moved to Florida’s “Space Coast” and have

no family/friends who can give me references. Is there some kind of database I
can search for “Fat-Friendly” GP’s?

I can assure you that there are fat friendly docs out there. Don’t give up on
finding one and don’t settle for one that isn’t. You are paying them. If they
say or do something that you don’t like or is offensive, tell them. And don’t
go back. One way you may find a good GP is to call the WLS in your area and
ask him/her for a recommendation. Another way is to call your local hospital.
They usually have physician referral services. When I was looking for a new
OB/GYN when I was pregnant with my first child and living in a new area, I told
them I wanted a female that was educated in the USA and that didn’t speak with
an accent. No offense, but I didn’t want an Indian or Asian doctor that I would
have difficulty understanding. They were great and hooked me up with the
perfect, all female OB practice. I used a similar service again when we moved to
another state and we were looking for a PCP. Our PCP is great. He is very fat
friendly and when he doesn’t know something, he is open to me educating him.

Anyway, my advice, keep looking and don’t settle! You deserve the best. We all
    do.

Thanks for the responses. I had honestly been considering approaching my
    surgeon of choice about it.
Not to mention the dreaded “I” word but, if I were considering asking my
“I”-people to pay for the procedure, would it be a problem if I asked the
surgeon for a local GP with experience in this area? I have read some cases
where the “I” people can be mighty picky.
