Kidney stones anybody??
Holy crow!! Kidney stones???!! I don’t use tums much anymore, I’ve
been using Viactive… is this calcium carbonate? Nobody mentioned
anything at my doc’s office about kidney stones! But it does make
sense, I had heard in the past that too much calcium can “calcify”
(if that’s a real word) your kidneys.
Is there any type of chewable (or very small) calcium citrate pills
on the market? I’m also concerned about the opening out of my
stomach and not getting anything stuck..

Kay,
Viactive is Calcium Carbonate. To my knowledge I’ve not found chewables (at
least those soft kinds) in Citrate. I did try a chewable wafer (huge) and now
use Vitalady’s Super Calcium. 500mg in a small capsule so we need to take fewer
to get in out quota. E-Z to swallow too!

Hi folks –
About a year before my RNY (7/16/99) a kidney stone emerged from my right
kidney while I was on a business trip. It was too large to pass, so I had to
have surgery to get it pulverized and out of there.
The kidney specialists back home in Orlando told me that yes, a buildup of
calcium was definitely causing the crystals and stones to appear, but that
the real problem was that I wasn’t drinking enough water to flush my kidneys
of the extra buildup. (They were right — at time I was severely
dehydrated — all I drank was diet sodas!) The doctors went on to say that
the greatest aid to the kidneys is water…not to mention the body.
After that I started forcing myself to drink water…and then after a while
I was drinking a gallon of water a day and that wasn’t even enough, although
I was never thirsty at that point. Even now the right amount of water for my
weight is to drink 120oz a day. *grin* So, be sure not to forget about
drinking water…
Good luck folks!

I’ve seen a chewable calcium citrate at GNC. Haven’t tried it yet. Has
anyone else?

Geesh it has been so long since I have posted. Barb I wanted to tell you though
that you have just met one. A gastric bypass patient who takes calcium citrate
and had my first kidney stone. I passed it in June. Had two more and had to have
the lithotripsy to break them up in August. This caused a bleed and hematoma
around my kidney that caused me to be severly anemic. I am going this morning
for a cat scan to make sure everything has healed now. Oct 1 2003 was my one
year anniversary from my surgery. I have lost 119 pounds and I feel great. I did
ask my surgeon if the stone(s) were related to the surgery. He says not and also
said the calcium supplement I take is not the kind to cause kidney stones.
Though my stone was a calcium stone. Who knows I just know it was the worst pain
I have ever ever been in and I have had numerous surgerys and gave birth to two
children.
My urologist did say that I need to drink plenty of fluids. Lack of fluids is
what can cause the crystalization of stones.
