Need help with urgent question
H i Deb,
Im not a JW but my sister is and I asked my surgeon about blood
transfussions in surgery and this is what he had to say……
If a surgeon is really careful there is no need for one. Transfusions just
make the surgeons job easier when they are not very careful.
So, a careful surgeon is the hallmark of a good doctor…….

Well I refute you because childbirth is different from surgery! Mine has
never had to use blood transfusions so I stand by what he said, in his
surgical experiences over 15 yrs he never had to resort to blood
transfusions EXCEPT in circumstances involving trauma such as car accidents,
etc.

Judie,
I am not trying to argue with you, or be harsh with your surgeon, but things DO
happen. Yes, careful is always better, that is common sense, but things do
happen sometimes during surgery. The human body is so complex, cells always
working, blood pumping, organs working or not working, ZILLIONS of things going
on at the same time every second.
I am a nursing student, SPECIFICALLY studying to be an OR nurse. Spend some time
in surgery, watch all different kinds of surgeries, and see all the things that
just pop up. You would be amazed.
Being careful is always a good thing, who would want a surgeon who isn’t? But to
say undoubtedly that ALL blood related problems during surgery come from
carelessness is unbelieveable at best, completely wrong at worst.
Sorry, this is just my .02, I’ve personally witnessed enough to stand by my
statements. The body is constantly in motion, and throws curve balls quite
frequently.

I personally know of at least 2 situations where my
surgeon was forced to use blood transfusions. Neither
was his fault. One was a case of a defective surgical
cutter which resulted in a lacerated esophagus. The
other was a patient who failed to inform the surgeon
about a clotting disorder. Both Pt’s suffered major
bleeding & required a transfusion. Sometimes stuff
just happens. These are just cases I have some
knowledge of.
