Gastric bypass surgery article

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

There is a good article in the November 4, 2003 Family Circle
magazine. For all of you considering WLS, the article describes and
compares the different types of weight loss surgery. It also suggests
questions to ask potential WLS surgeons.

If you ate when you were stressed, was this a problem after surgery? How did you
handle it?
**** It’s been mostly a matter of finding other ways to get my needs met, along
with getting used to not stuffing emotional needs with food. Finding ways to
distract myself until the feeling (to eat) passes.
If you REALLY enjoy eating, was it a problem to not be able to eat
everything you wanted to? Or to not eat sweets if you have dumping
syndrome? How did you deal with it?
**** Not much of a problem, as I am scared to death of full-fledged dumping.
Immediately post-op, nothing tasted right, things still taste too sweet, so that
helps. And I try not to be in a situation where I feel deprived (I take SF
chocolates or other SF dessert to parties, etc.) And occasionally, I indulge -
yesterday, I ate a sliver of a (so-called) killer brownie (it was a sample in
grocery), and a 1 bite sample of marionberry pie. Neither was worth it - didn’t
taste that good, and made me crave 2 hours later. ‘Nother lesson learned.

I’m Back…1 week post-op!!!

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Hello Everyone,
I am 1 week and 1 day post-op…I can’t believe I am
“on the other side”! Thank you to all who sent
messages of support pre-op…it really helped. I am
still very tired but have been walking as much as
possible. Today I had my 1st soft solid
food…scrambled egg. I am glad to be able to chew
now! (and chew, and chew, and chew….!)
I will write more later.

Help.. questons before my surgery 10/21

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if anyone knows what the basic rule of thumb is for daily
intake amounts of required Vitamins and proteins etc. after WLS.. (for men)
I bought some multi-vitamin chewables. Plus some Calcium Citrate 600 chewables.
My Surgery is Tuesday the 21st and I want to make sure I am equipped with the
proper amounts before I get home for my intake. I think I will opt for the
monthly B shots.
Also I was told that I will most likely be getting my IVC filter removed after a
few month.?
Has anyone else had the IVC filter installed that has been removed?/ Is it
something that does indeed get removed. I was under the impression that it was
a gift theat you knept for life. Any input on this would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Surgery on 10/21 & I now have sinus infection - can this impact my s

Friday, August 25th, 2006

I’m having surgery in just a few short days and I have come down
with a mild sinus infection.
My PCP has prescribed a z-pack antibiotic for me, but was wondering
if anyone has experienced this and did it cause your surgery to be
postponed?
Thanks, Peg

Thank you…..

I just wanted to thank all for the positive posts regarding my
situation with my job and all. I am going to continue onward. I’ve
got my fingers crossed that things work out- I’m gonna tell my doctor
to get his butt moving so I don’t run out of insurance before the
operation.
Thanks all!!

Need help with urgent question

Friday, August 25th, 2006

H i Deb,
Im not a JW but my sister is and I asked my surgeon about blood
transfussions in surgery and this is what he had to say……
If a surgeon is really careful there is no need for one. Transfusions just
make the surgeons job easier when they are not very careful.
So, a careful surgeon is the hallmark of a good doctor…….

Post-op Back Muscle Spasms

Friday, August 25th, 2006

A question to all Posties,
Have you run into muscle spasms in your backs and or abdomen? I’m 7
months post op and over the last week or so I have started having these
nasty spasms in my back. I should have prefaced this by saying that i
do have a congenital bad back with one of the lower sacral vertebra
which is supposed to be fused is not so over my life time I have
experienced the occasional episode of really bad back pain (throwing it
out or twisting or lifting the wrong way and thus pinching the nerve)
This spasm that I’m having now is nothing like that. This spasm seems
to start on the right and flash over to the left side of my back.
Sometimes if I suck in the abdomen it will start there and go through to
the back - It is very strange
The really odd thing about it all is that when I was at my highest
weight (350) and through the ups and downs of my weight history ( at
least for the last 8 - 10 years) I have had no problems with my back.

How much protein can we absorb?

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

The word from manufacturers’ sports nutritionists is that no one except
professional athletes and bodybuilders can absorb more than 30 grams of protein
at one time.
Won’t hurt you, except in the wallet.

Subject: absorption questions?
Can anyone tell me again how much protein can be absorbed at one
time? I am drinking protein drinks with appr. 50 grams of protein and
need to know if it is pointless to be drinking that much in one
sitting? Also I have a hard time drinking water all day long so I try
to drink most of my water in the morning to early afternoon. Does
anyone know whether or not it matters if it is spread throughout the
day or consumed in a shorter period of time? Thank you for any
insight.
